First of all, this isn’t really the creme-de-la-creme of 80’s USPM; there are some good moments, for sure – but it’s no Heir Apparent debut. Dragonne does that sorta power/heavy blend that I guess you could say Leatherwolf and Banshee (especially post debut) do. I mean at times it’s pretty much thrash (‘Catch Me if you Can’), and others it’s a bit more fantasy involved. An interesting mix, with some really great songs, but not as good as it gets. Still, if you’re a fan of the genre, it might pay to give this album a go and see for yourself.
The title track is a gallopy speed metal attempt that thunders along for four and a half minutes, but doesn’t really scream ‘power’ at you. It’s akin to that Iron Maiden instrumental filler track ‘Losfer Words’ (off Powerslave); rumbling bass, riff changes etc, and there’s some serious guitar wank at the end. Totally listenable, but seems a bit lackluster until the final third, where it really kicks off. Still, a pretty good track really, but I feel it would’ve benefited from some over the top USPM shrieks and showing off vocal pitch changes. Things get a bit more conventional in ‘Long Way’ where gang vocal shouts keep that thrash metal vibe I spoke of earlier going. The chorus is actually pretty good here. You have plenty of voices in the chorus itself, giving a nice powerful harmony, coupled with an awesome display of guitar lead after the second chorus. This one sounds more like straight up heavy metal with a slight power influence.
Elsewhere on the album, the slower track ‘Heaven Calls’ slows things down, and calls on a bit more of a USPM vibe. Lyrics are very, very fantasy orientated, while there’s an epic tone, and some really great action in the chorus, with lots of voices contributing to the backup vocals again. This one has a bit of an Iron Maidenish feel – especially given the verse guitar riffs, and the vocal tones (though this singer is no Bruce Dickinson). Anyway, for me this is one of the better tracks, and it’s probably the best one on the album so far at this point. Vocals aren’t exactly fantastic throughout the album, but in tracks like this one he at least gets the job done (hell, he’s better than me). More maiden comes through with the bass tone I reckon, but the guitar solo is again the high point here. Talent.
Basically, despite some good moments, and some pretty thrilling guitar solos – this one isn’t exactly top-notch stuff. The guitarist is talented, and I do like the Iron Maidenish kind of approach they have going on (surprisingly, I don’t hear a lot of Maiden coming through in this sub genre). This one could have benefitted from some slightly better vocals (and much more high shrieks), and more rehearsal by the sounds. Don’t get me wrong, the songs are pretty well written, and complex, but they do feel a bit rough in delivery. ‘Dream Forever’ sounds kinda like Glacier or Leatherwolf a little bit, but not as polished as the latter, and elsewhere ‘Heaven Calls’ and the title track are pretty good. If you’re reading this as a pre-cursor to perhaps getting the album, listen to ‘Dream Forever’ or ‘Heaven Calls’ and see if you take a shine to it. If not, go pick up the Blackstorm (US) demo I reviewed in this series – it kills. On this one there are strong moments here and there, and by no means ‘bad’.
