First-ever reissue of hard rock monster and 1975 debut Lp from Minnesota's CAIN! A hard rock fan's dream with Lloyd Forsberg's "ahead of their time" guitar licks and Jiggs Lee's raucous vocals. Features a full digital re-mastering along with liner notes, lyrics and photos!
"A Pound Of Flesh" was originally recorded and released in 1975. Today, over thirty years later this debut album by Minnesota rock outfit Cain gets another - well deserved - shot.
Right now in 2003 there's obviously a market for re-releases. Even the pop charts are rarely lacking a cover tune from a seventies, eighties or nineties pop or rock tune. Is the well running that dry folks? Hmmmm.
Though some of these Top 40 cover tunes are amusing, most suck BIG time, so I prefer a re-release of a classic rock album anytime. I'm from '72 myself, so obviously I missed the original release of "A Pound Of Flesh",and unfortunately the band was disbanded soon after their second album. A third never saw the light of day.
Today, "A Pound Of Flesh" will depend entirely on an audience that actively looks for re-releases such as this. That and some decent marketing might well be enough to reach the audience there undoubtedly is for classic seventies rock.
There's quite a few 'older' bands I really enjoy listening to. Queen, The Eagles, The Who... a little bit of everything I guess. The music that Cain plays is hardly 'my thing', but I can't deny that there's a couple of very enjoyable tunes here.
"Katy" shows the excellent singer that Jiggs Lee was to his full extent. Soulful at times, and amazingly powerful at other times. I'm sure he's doing a fine job nowadays being a sound system designer. His musical qualities ooze from every pore of this shiny little disk.
The rest of the band; Dave Elmeer (bass, acoustic, keyboards), Lloyd Forsberg (electric guitar) and drummer Kevin DeRemer complement Jiggs and oneanother perfectly. This band sounds like they could've taken on early Led Zeppelin any given time.
But alas, as I told before, their career was short-lived. Thanks to Monster Records however, what little legacy Cain left behind is - at least partly - available to the public once again.

Here's a record that could use a good cd reissue. Damn solid hard rock slab from these dudes who sound like a cross between Grand Funk Railroad and Deep Purple. Not much in the tune department, but a very enjoyable listen. Plus dig the white guys big fro in the gatefold. That's dedication there, I think his is almost as big as the guy in Steppenwolf.
Originally released in 1971. The debut from this east coast 6-piece features twin-guitars, lots of organ interplay and soaring vocals. A superb bridging of psychedelia and progressive. Highly recommended!!

.
This 1972 album was previously only available as a hideously rare private pressing. Five tracks of hard and heavy rock, with some outstanding guitar and keyboard work make up the only album from this Scottish band. Akarma CD comes in elaborate fold out "crucifix" hard card sleeve.
On the Comet Records website, were you can purchase this self-titled Bodkin LP, it says "File close to Black Sabbath." This music had no similarities to the heavy metal godfathers' recordings. The only thing that was comparable was the inference to Satanism with the burning cross and the offertory head of a ram.
What you will find most intriguing besides the music however is how the LP was packaged. The sleeve the album comes housed in has so many folds you will think that you are doing origami. The album cover actually folds out into what you see pictured here, and it is quite large. You can use it as a poster if you wish because the actual LP has its own self-contained sleeve built around the poster. There is no doubt that this is one of the more unusual LP's I have had the pleasure to listen to and enjoy from the label since I started covering their product in 2000.
The Hammond Organ is the primary instrument on this LP. The influence of its sound fits principally well within each song. "Aunty Mary's Trashcan," easily the best track on the LP, is nearly 11 minutes long and it illustrates my point perfectly. "Plastic Man" was the only cut where the guitar cuts loose as a featured instrument. All of you six-string aficionados need not being distraught over this as the electric guitar is an essential part of the mix with this music, it just is not as out front as you may be accustomed to.
If you look at the year this was recorded (1972) and where (U.K.) it is obvious what the group was trying to accomplish. They, like many others, were attempting to break new ground and become more progressive utilizing the keyboards as center from where their sound emanated from, while building the rest of the instruments around it. As successful as they were in accomplishing this they never made it as others did from the country. I a most thankful that bands that created such wonderful rock music can be given their just due and remembered with excellent reissues like this one.

With hindsight, it seems as if the Zombies didn't so much come to a halt as split off into two different directions. Colin Blunstone would take the band's poppiest, sweetest elements; Argent would take the gutsier ones, and appropriate the intricate keyboard arrangements (naturally enough, as keyboardist Rod Argent was the leader of both Argent and the Zombies). Neither Blunstone nor Argent would approach the majesty of the Zombies' prime, but they'd offer some pretty fair approximations. And that's what you get on Argent's self-titled debut — a fair approximation of late-period Zombies, with a much heavier hard/progressive rock feel. There's nothing that's nearly as arresting as Odessey and Oracle, but it's not bad at all. Includes Russ Ballard's "Liar," the first Argent track to get heavy airplay in the U.S.
Argent were an English rock band founded in 1968 by keyboardist Rod Argent, formerly of The Zombies.
The first three demos from Argent, recorded in the autumn of 1968 featured Mac MacLeod on bass guitar.
The other original members were bassist Jim Rodford (Rod Argent's cousin and formerly with the Mike Cotton Sound), drummer Robert Henrit and guitarist/keyboardist Russ Ballard (both formerly with The Roulettes and Unit 4 + 2). Lead vocal duties were shared between Ballard and Argent.
Rod Argent, Chris White (former Zombies bassist) and Russ Ballard were the group's songwriters. Some of Ballard's compositions became hits when they were covered by other artists, including Kiss, Rainbow, Hello and Santana.
When Ballard left in 1974, he was replaced by guitarist/vocalist John Verity and guitarist John Grimaldi and there followed a period of intense recording and touring until the band decided to come off the road late in 1976. Rodford, Henrit and Verity briefly continued together under the name Phoenix before going their separate ways, with first Rodford and then Henrit becoming members of The Kinks.
Argent's biggest hit was Rod Argent and Chris White's "Hold Your Head Up"from the All Together Now album, which, in a heavily-edited single form, reached #5 in the U.S. They also recorded the original version of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You", written by Russ Ballard, which was covered by Kiss in 1992 under the name "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II", and featured prominently at the end of the film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. The song also became a Contemporary Christian rock anthem and was twice covered by the Gospel band Petra, in 1977 (on the album Come and Join Us) and again in 1984 (on the album Beat the System), albeit with new verses. The Russ Ballard song "Liar" on Argent's first album became a hit for Three Dog Night.
The sound of the band was a mix of rock and pop, but also covered more progressive rock territory in songs like "The Coming of Kohoutek," an instrumental from their Nexus album. When Ballard left the band after Encore, they took an even more progressive/fusion turn with their final Epic album Circus and then signed to a new record label (United Artists) for the final 1975 album Counterpoints. By 2005, all albums, including compilations, have been re-released on CD, except Counterpoints.

Empyrium started as German symphonic folk/doom metal and later neofolk band founded in 1994 by Markus Stock (mostly using the pseudonym Ulf T. Schwadorf) and Andreas Bach, but later many other participated. Their first two albums, A Wintersunset and Songs of Moors and Misty Fields, following a demo entitled ...Der wie ein Blitz vom Himmel fiel..., can be considered doom metal (or, as some will argue, folk metal) with folk and symphonic influences. They combine harsh and operatic male vocals, with deep slow guitar parts and atmospheric sounds.
It is their second LP.

Alcest biography

ALCEST is a French experimental/ post black metal act formed in 2000 in Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The band started out as a black metal act but has gradually incorporated shoegaze and experimental/ post black metal elements into their sound. ALCEST is basically a one-man act consisting of Neige who compose, sing and play all instruments. ALCEST first release was the "Tristesse Hivernale" demo tape. At this point ALCEST was a three-piece consisting of Neige on Rhythm & Acoustic guitar,Drums, Vocals, Argoth on bass and Hegnor on lead guitar. The two latter are only featured on this release. Neige released the "Le Secret" EP in 2005 and in 2007 ALCEST debut full-length studio album "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde" followed. ALCEST has released some split releases since. Neige also hold membership of other prolific Frech underground acts such as AMESOEURS, PESTE NOIRE and VALFUNDE.

The record is rather short, just about 40 minutes, but nevertheless it offers a lot to discover. The general sound contains the typical swedish elements such as melotron and slight folk influences here and again. The influence of "Landberk" can't be overheard. But Paatos are far from being a Landberk clone. Apart from "Tea" and "They are beautiful" the sound is, despite the melancholia, much heavier and contains more jazz ingredients. The opener "Sensor" shows impressively what you can expect from this album. A relaxed and mellow e-piano opens the song before it shifts to a drifty groove with wild drumming and superp bass, not to forget Petronella Nettermalm's intensive voice. After a bombastic part with nice melotron, follows a cracking instrumental part which ends the song, amazing. "Hypnotique" is the highlight of the album. A dreamy ballad with Petronella's voice in the limilight. After a mellow instrumental part the song get's faster and heavier in the end. Some nice flute, melotron of course and again the awesome drumming which adds the jazzy flair. A great song. "Tea" finally offers swedish vocals, a beautiful, quite mellow song with a jazzy feel to it, mainly because of the rythm group. "They are beautiful" reminds me of the last "Landberk" album "Indian Summer". The booklet offers the information that it was also written by Dimle, Fiske and Helje, all (former) members of "Landberk". The last song "Quits" abducts you abruplty to a quite different world, a very modern one. It commences with antsy programmed Drum'n'Bass rythms, downright remembering me of Trip-Hop. In combination with the vocals even bands like "Portished" come to my mind. Some nice e-piano notes carry to an amazing compount of deep bass melodies, wind instrument inputs and the aforesaid programmed "beats" and e-piano. But that's not everything the song has to offer; the end can be described as wild free- jazz with Van der Graaf like Saxophone chunking, truly absorbing. It's a perfect closure.

Debut album from this Mannheim (west of Frankfurt) quintet (standard prog quartet plus a lead singer and acoustic guitarist) that will have a relatively long life, starting at the dawn of the 70's and ending just before close to the end of it. Their sound was a relatively hard prog rocking album where the organ and guitar alternate at the front of the music, while the English lyrics singing from Werner Stephan is pleasant and apt. Having taken their name from Chinese mythology, and gracing their self titled debut with an heavenly garden scene, this album Starting out with a lengthy Fairy Tales where the organs and guitar trade licks and solos reminiscent of Deep Purple, Wallenstein or Birth Control. Although one of the more pleasant tracks on this album, the song works well but there are lengths and the drum passages is heard-elsewhere. The following slow Sometime is a better track to give you an idea of the typical KPM sound, with delicious organ layers underlining the verses and searing guitars leads between the verses and chorus. While the third track is also a lengthy affair, Don't You Know is again promising but delivering fully. The jam- like instrumental sections are good, but they are a little too brutal of a change from the average song-proper parts. The flipside is much in the same spirit developing a semi-hard rock wherethe short tracks succeed to other mid-length, but there is nothing reallyenthralling, but rest assured nothing boring either. Typically the type of album that needs a few listens before unleashing its treasures; but those riches are not that deep either. Some moments of Drugsen's Trip and My Dove (with Mellotrons) are brilliant, but as with all other tracks, there are many other things to could've been easily bettered thatit is a bit frustrating as usually Conrad Plank-engineered albums hit the spot much easier than KPM's debut. The last two tracks are average rock tracks in the line of what's been done before. The Second Battle reissue comes with bonus tracks from non-album singles and add length to the album, maintaining the general quality level, but not raising it either. Although rather pleasant, I found this album a bit over-rated in its reputation, it is hardly worth the stamp to write home about, either. Not essential, but it won't deface your collection either.

This album is far heavier than the previous Helstar album, with most of the riffs here being thrash metal. There is far more of an Iron Maiden styled gallop to all of the songs, while the lead guitar continues to remain impressive, and James Rivera emits some more of the best shrieks ever recorded.
The highlights include the title track, which starts off pretty slowly, and never really gets past slightly faster than midpaced, but nonethelesssets the tone for this album. "Suicidal Nightmare" has a New York style thrash break (i.e. Nuclear Assault) in the middle, and "Angel of Death" has a really cool solo at the end.
Everything on here is solid - there are no throwaway tracks, and all of the songs are memorable in their own way, though the similarity is much stronger than on the first album. Highly recommended.

Helstar, words cannot describe how amazing this band would become with this powerful debut, and the next three albums to follow. Somehow, like others have said, they seem to get slightly overlooked and people tend to gravitate more towards Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Fates Warning, and other bands of that time. Which is a shame because Helstar could very well be beyond many of those bands in every way. Fans of more rare metal from the early 80's, such as Jag Panzer's "Ample Destruction" or Omen's "Battle Cry", take heed with Helstar and this debut "Burning Star".
One thing that sets Helstar apart from many other bands during the 80's, is that they were always more technically agressive. There's no argueing that Helstar's come up with some of the most original, and coolest riffs ever. And when you get to the complex shredding solo's, it just tears your face up. They are blazing fast, technical, aggressive, melodic, and oustanding. Along with top notch production quality for its time, there's no faults to be found here at all. This album has some of Helstar's greatest songs. The opening "Burning Star" along with the ever so popular"Run with the Pack" are just a few to mention. From the beginning, to theend this is a solid album. There's really no fillers to be found here. Some songs are overall better than others, but every song is unique and keeps a strong sense of Speed Metal consistency.

Electric Sandwich were formed in late 1969 by a group of German students from Bonn. The band initially consisted of four musicians, all of whom had already played with other bands: bass player Klaus Lormann had been playing with "Chaotic Trust"; lead guitarist Jorg Ohlert used to be with "Slaves of Fire"; drummer Wolf Fabian, the founder of the band, had been touring with a band called "Muli and the Misfits", and singer Jochen "Archie" Carthaus sang with the "Flashbacks".Their own material has been recorded into the legendary Dieter Dirks Studio in Stommeln (1973 Brain catalogue). The music contains typical spaced out, freak n roll improvisations with many jazzy rock ingredients, folkish accents and Mellotron excursions. What's so fascinating about "Electric Sandwich" is the fact that each of the seven songs is different from the rest even though the band developed a homogeneous sound concept. Asked about the diversity of styles his band toyed around with, songwriter Ohlert replied: "Electric Sandwich are not limited to one single style of music. We change styles, even in the middle of a song, because we want our music to be alive." To achieve this goal the band not only rehearsed every week but also reserved one evening of the week to discuss their respective creative visions. The lyrics deal with stories that complete a full circle from birth to death. In "Nervous Creek", for example, Electric Sandwich tell the story of a river eventually flowing into the sea. "Material Darkness" deals with the life of a city dweller. In the release information, Wolf Fabian comments: "We deliberately like to create an intellectual attitude. We try to design our lyrics in a way that allows a listener with poor knowledge of English to understand them.
