Julian Jay Savarin was the leader and main songwriter in Julian's Treatment. He wrote, directed, and played on the 1970 double concept album A Time Before This. It is based on the book Lemmus, A Time Trilogy - Waiters On The Dance, which Savarin wrote. A poet and writer, as well as a musician, he used his multi-talented focus to his advantage on many different projects.
Lemmus / A Time Trilogy-Waiters On The Dance, originally released in 1971 and re-released by Akarma Records in 2001, comes attractively packaged with the original artwork in the vinyl and CD formats.
A concept album with excellent music seems to be more ear catching than any other type of recording. When you know that there is a story behind the music, better yet an entire book, the entire picture begins to formulate in your minds eye. When you then take that formula and add powerful guitar riffs, grinding organ, and Lady Jo Meeks’ (later with Catapilla) voice to tell the story and set it all in motion with feeling, you have all the elements for a successful musical endeavor that spells progressive rock. This LP is a classic that deserves an abundance of attention by those that appreciate what this captivating genre has always had to offer its devout listeners. I am like many of you; I had never heard of this album before and felt entirely blown away by its impact. I am sure you will be too, and then you will wonder why you had not heard of this sooner. As the saying goes… better late then never, get it now!

Excellent hard rock with progressive adds and psychodelic elements ( "Turn Over"), similar to Deep Purple,Twenty Sixty Six And Then and Waterloo. Song nr 2 is one of the best songs in hard-prog's history! Powerhouse ( Klinger and anonymous Rab and Werner) did they best! This album might be one of the best LP's with Mellotron.
A half-British, half-German affair (the same line-up that would record the eponymous masterpiece Message), From Books and Dreams is a dark, hard-rocking psychedelic album. The production makes for a very spacy, dirty and blurry atmosphere that serves the album well. I recommend listening to this album in the evening (preferably an autumn evening), light up a few candles, unplug the phone, sit back, lie down or whatever, and listen...
1 - Sleep : Not really a song, more of an introduction. A feeling of intense, wrenching vertigo, similar to the moment before falling into subconsciousness and the dream realm, is well depicted here. Blurry, psychedelic, a perfect mood setter.
2 - Dreams and Nightmares (Dreams) - One of the two very high points (personnaly I can't find any weak points) of this album. Starts where Sleep left off, with an hypnotic guitar theme, repeated for a while (the German influence, I guess) and built up until a riff change and vocals kick in. Now, some may not like Tom McGuigan's voice, I know I really love it. Not always on tone, he more than makes up for it with intensity and theatricality. Alan Murdoch shines all through the song, with amazing hard-rocking catchy riffs and a main theme that will be stuck in your head for days, months, maybe years. The rythm section, not as creative as on the eponymous album, is nonetheless very tight and enjoyable to listen to. A great support for Murdoch's riffs. Lyrically, the song dabbles in the nonsense of dreams (as does the whole album), therefore do not expect lyrics to make much sense, all the while still making sense (as dreams do). The song segues into :
3 - Turn Over! : A dark, psychedelic guitar pattern graces the song, serving as background to Tom McGuigan's saxophone wailing. This closed side one of the vinyl, as the words 'Turn Over' are repeated quite a few times at the end of the song, when the needle reaches the end of the lp (this trick was also used by Ange on Le Cimetiθre des Arlequins, and probably by countless others in that period).
4 - Sigh : Another psychedelic rocking number, but less dark than anything on side one. The majority of the chords are happy sounding, but that doesn't make the song less interesting. Once again, Murdoch's guitar lines are the focus of the song, and McGuigan's vocal melodies are also very interesting.
5 - Dreams and Nightmares (Nightmares) : The other high point of the album. The inclusion of keyboards makes for a haunting effect. Catchy dark riffs all the way through, interesting chord progressions... a great track.
This is my second Message album, and even though it is a bit less progressive than the eponymous, it is nonetheless an amazing album. Might not be a masterpiece, but it is damn close to being one. 4.5 stars. A shame these guys did not get the recognition they deserved at that time.

Christine Perfect - 1970 - Selftitled

Released: 1970

Christine Perfect is the self-titled debut album of the music artist of the same name (Perfect being the maiden name of the future Christine McVie). It was released just after she left Chicken Shack but before she joined Fleetwood Mac. The Album contained the hit single "I'd Rather Go Blind" from Christine's days with Chicken Shack.
Christine McVie (born Christine Anne Perfect on July 12, 1943 near Greenodd, Cumbria) is an English rock singer, keyboardist, and songwriter. Her primary fame came as a member of the British/American rock band Fleetwood Mac though she has also released three solo albums. McVie has a deep contralto vocal range.
Christine Anne Perfect was born in the small village of Bouth in the Lake District, but eventually grew up in the Bearwood area of Smethwick, where her father, Cyril, was a college professor and concert violinist. Christine's mother Beatrice (called Tee) was a medium, a psychic and a faith healer. Her grandfather had played the organ in Westminster Abbey. Although Christine had been introduced to the piano at age four, she didn't really take to music until she was 11. She continued taking classical music lessons until the age of 15, when her older brother, John, brought home a Fats Domino songbook which transformed her musical interest from classical music to rock n' roll. Other early influences include The Everly Brothers and The Beatles.
Christine studied sculpture at an art college in Birmingham, England for five years, with the goal of becoming an art teacher. During that time she met a number of budding musicians in England's blues scene. Although studying art at the time Christine had an innate love for the music business. Her first foray into the music field didn't come until she met two friends Stan Webb and Andy Silvester in a pub one night. At the time they were playing in a band called "Shades Of Blue" which had a few dates booked but no bass guitarist. Knowing that Christine had musical talent they asked her to join. Also during that time she would often sing with Spencer Davis. After five years Christine graduated from art college with a teaching degree, but by that time "Shades of Blue" had split up.
Fresh out of art college, Christine found that she didn't have enough money to launch herself into the art world, so she moved to London, where she worked briefly as a department store window dresser.
In 1968, a friend of Christine told her that her ex-bandmates Andy Silvester and Stan Webb were forming a blues band and were looking for a pianist, so she wrote to them asking to join them. A few days later they replied, inviting her to play keyboards/piano and sing background vocals in their band Chicken Shack. Christine stayed with Chicken Shack for two albums and together they scored the top 10 British hit "I'd Rather Go Blind" with Christine on lead vocals. She was given a Melody Maker award for female vocalist of the year, and she was lauded for having one of the "top 10 pairs of legs in all of Britain". Christine left Chicken Shack in 1969 after meeting Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie.
Christine was a big fan of Fleetwood Mac at the time and while touring with Chicken Shack the two bands would often run into each other (they were also stablemates at Blue Horizon). Encouraged to continue her career, she recorded a solo album, Christine Perfect, which she does not feel is among her better works. As Christine McVie, she joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970, just after marrying Fleetwood Mac bass guitarist John McVie. She had already contributed backup vocals, played keyboards, and painted the cover for Kiln House. The band had just lost founding member Peter Green and its members were nervous about touring without him. McVie had been a huge fan of the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, and since she knew all the lyrics to their songs, she went along. McVie quickly became an essential member of the group and the author of some of its finest songs, a position she would continue to hold for nearly 25 years.
The early 1970s was a rocky time for the band, with a revolving door of musicians, and only the albums Mystery to Me and Bare Trees scoring any successes. Furthermore, a group impersonating Fleetwood Mac was touring the United States without their permission. John McVie's alcohol drinking became unbearable, and Christine had an affair with a music producer.

1971 classic Birmingham UK heavy prog album from Norman Haines Band (post Locomotive and formerly Sacrifice). The sound is much like Locomotive with perhaps the odd slice of Arzachel style jamming. Featuring Neil Clark on guitar, Andy Hughes on bass & vocals, Jimmy Skidmore on drums and Mr Haines himself on keyboards & vocals. A single was taken from the album (Finding My Way Home/Rabbits) and released under the name Avalanche! Great cover art and a superb version of the Locomotive track "Mr. Armageddon". .
Here again the genius of Haines stands out, but the entire record can be considered one of the finest and least-known prog albums ever to see the light of day.
At its time of release, many shops refused to stock Den Of Iniquity, sighting the album's grotesque cover as just too disgusting for the sensitive record-buying public to cope with. What a mistake. Not only did lovers of prog miss out on a truly great album but also its absence from record shop shelves turned it into one of the most sought-after collector’s items of all time, with originals now fetching more than £1000!
Den Of Iniquity boasts many musical highlights, but its finest moments were two instrumentals, Rabbits and Haines' Life Is So Unkind. Unfortunately, after the release of one final solo 45, Give It To You Girl, Haines called it a day and disappeared into obscurity, leaving behind not just the thought that a potentially-great and influential musician had retired far too early, but that the legacy of his brief career was one of the most collectable prog albums ever.

One of the great, lost prog rock albums, Dr. Z's “Three Parts to My Soul” ended up being one of the rarest albums on the "swirl" Vertigo label, with only 80 copies said to exist. Luckily it was reissued many times, starting with Second Battle in Germany, Si- Wan in Korea, Universal in Japan, and most recently Akarma in Italy. Most of these reissues replicate the original gimmick cover (a die-cut fold-out cover not unlike ELP's “Brain Salad Surgery”).
Dr. Z was lead by North Wales university professor Keith Keyes, who handles keyboards (harpsichord, piano, organ), as well as vocals, with Bob Watkins on drums, and Rob Watson on bass. This is another album, like BLACK WIDOW's “Sacrifice”, that featured lyrics that flirted with the occult in a prog rock setting. Here Keyes had the idea that in the afterlife, your soul is divided in to three parts, with a Latin term to each, Spiritus, Manes et Umbra. Spiritus was the soul that goes to heaven, Manes is the soul that's damned to Hell, and Umbra being the soul that stays on Earth to eternally haunt. There are some people who don't think this album is particularly good. OK, so don't expect polished YES/GENESIS-influenced prog here. What you get is early British prog, dominated mainly by harpsichord, with occult lyrics and very peculiar vocals, trying to sound "evil". The production isn't the greatest in the world, although it was produced by Patrick Campbell-Lyons of NIRVANA (the late '60s/early '70s UK band that is, hardly the Kurt Cobain-led grunge band everyone knows of).
"Evil Woman's Manly Child" is said to be a reverse of the Ten Commandments. Here you get two voices, a whispered voice and a sung voice. This is truly one of the album's many high points. "Spiritus, Manes et Umbra" could almost sound like a hit if things worked out a bit different for the band (and of course, rid of the drum solo). It's such a catchy little song. "Summer For the Rose" shows some psychedelic elements, showing how in 1971, the 1960s hadn't totally vanished. "Burn in Anger" is a piano-dominated ballad that truly screams 1971, while "Too Well Satisfied" is one of those cheesy songs with lots of appeal. "In a Token of Despair" is the closing ballad, regarding the spirit that haunts the Earth. The entire album has that theatrical quality. Many of the reissues come with two bonus cuts, "Lady Ladybird" and "People in the Street", which was released as a single back in 1970 on Fontana. What's really interesting about these two cuts, written by Keith Keyes as on “Three Parts to My Soul”, is you will find absolutely no signs of occult subject matters in these two songs. "Lady Ladybird" is a pretty cheery number. "People in the Street" on the other hand sounds too much like straight-up pop, lacking the charm of "Lady Ladybird". But for “Three Parts to My Soul”, this might not to be everyone's taste, but I like the album, regardless what might be said.

Symphonic elements in Metal is nowadays in fashion like never before. Bands like Therion made it largely popular and even way before neoclassical artists such as Ygnwie J. Malmsteen were amazing listeners with a blend of classical elements and Heavy Metal. But the German combo Haggard pushed this form of expression to a newer level with 2002's highly acclaimed "Awakening The Centuries". A full orchestra, a full choir and a very talented Metal base ranging from Heavy to Death Metal brought listeners to their knees. In this context, "Eppur Si Muove" surfaced in early 2004 and totally rocked my world.A one-piece monument of orchestration and head-banging riffs is the simplest way to sum up what this album has to offer, but it doesn't even come close to describe its content. Real piano, violins, violas, oboes and other flutes make this record an unmatched experience. The wide choir is a revolution in Metal spheres and the grunts and growls of the guitar player/singer add a tremendous dose of power, rage and emotion to the vocal department. Alternating pure classical pieces and epic blends of aforementioned styles, "Eppur Si Muove" is one of the best albums ever written. Every single listener would find his own favorite song here as they all produce a different effect. The duo composed by operatic singer Florian and growling singer Asis really expresses more than could be written about it while guitar riffs are astoundingly commanding. Not only is their music classical, it also carries a great deal of folkish aspects, medieval folk would be a better term in Haggard's case. 'Of A Might Divine' is the perfect example, with a imposing force that drives the melody from A to Z and let you totally speechless. 'Herr Mannelig' is another deep moment on the album with the purest voices I've ever heard and that male bass voice that makes you want to sing along although you know you cannot do it. It's a slow-paced piece but the guitars are so heavy that it's one of the catchiest song on the CD. 'The Observer' is another "epic picture", one can see visions unfold while listening to this one. Better than any movie one could see! The title track is one crazy composition, featuring splendid soprano female vocals on the chorus, but overall a terrific journey from which you'll never return. Once grabbed, there is no turning back. All these tracks are pure art and no doubt that Haggard is going to be around for a long time, at least let's hope so. The distinctiveness of their brilliant music is too much to be overlooked. So, forget all you've worshipped before, Haggard is almost certainly the only thing you'll want to hear afterwards. "Eppur si Muove" is one of 2004's must-listens, and if you still feel like avoiding it, know that it should be considered a crime

This British blues-rock group is remembered mostly for their keyboard player, Christine Perfect, who would join Fleetwood Mac after marrying John McVie and changing her last name. Although they were one of the more pedestrian acts of the British blues boom, Chicken Shack was quite popular for a time in the late '60s, placing two albums in the British Top 20. The frontperson of Chicken was not Perfect/McVie, but guitarist Stan Webb, who would excite British audiences by entering the crowds at performances, courtesy of his 100-meter-long guitar lead. They were signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, a British blues pillar that had its biggest success with early Fleetwood Mac.
Chicken Shack was actually not far behind Mac in popularity in the late '60s, purveying a more traditional brand of Chicago blues, heavily influenced by Freddie King. Although Webb took most of the songwriting and vocal duties, Christine Perfect also chipped in with occasional compositions and lead singing. In fact, she sang lead on their only British Top 20 single, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (1969). But around that time, she quit the music business to marry John McVie and become a housewife, although, as the world knows, that didn't last too long. Chicken Shack never recovered from Christine's loss, commercially or musically. Stan Webb kept Chicken Shack going, with a revolving door of other musicians, all the way into the 1980s, though he briefly disbanded the group to join Savoy Brown for a while in the mid-'70s.

If one can overlook Stan Webb's hyperventilating vocal excesses (which ain't easy), this is a promising debut, especially noteworthy for Webb's Freddie King-inspired guitar sting and Christine Perfect's understated vocals (only two, unfortunately compared to Webb's six). Webb does justice to his mentor with two instrumentals, King's "San-Ho-Zay" and his own "Webbed Feet," and Perfect proves the ideal counterpart — one of the few pianists paying homage to King's longtime collaborator Sonny Thompson. Nice spare sound, typical of Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label.

Howard Werth was born and raised in East London. The fledgling Werth was hooked on rock’n’roll from its inception, at an age when he was barely able to do more than eat, sleep and listen.
His earliest influences were drawn from the wide spectrum of rock’n’roll stars of the fifties; from Fats Domino, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Little Richard, to Presley, Johnny Cash, The Everlys and Buddy Holly through to The Coasters, The Drifters and many others of that period.
His musical taste buds were further tickled by his introduction to the jazz world of Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Miles Davis, along with his first introduction to the incredible voice of Ray Charles. In his early teens he was deeply drawn to the music of James Brown.
It’s hardly surprising that Howard’s early semi-pro outfits displayed a mixture of all these influences, especially those of Charles and Brown.
In the sixties Howard went to art school at the outset of the pop-art era and was trained by some of the major British exponents of that movement. Musically at the time Howard was indulging in the blues and r’n’b, which ran into his Motown / psychedelia period. At the same time Howard’s art & design skills had secured him a job at Pye Records designing album covers for The Kinks, Sandie Shaw, Marlene Dietrich and the Gerry Anderson Thunderbirds (and related) EP series, among countless other projects.
Towards the end of the decade Howard was working for IPC magazines as well as gigging at the Flamingo and various other London clubs of that era, and spending much of his spare time at the UFO Club, the Electric Garden, or the Drury Lane Arts Lab, where the notion of forming what was to become Audience first started to take form and nag at his creative nodes.
In early 1969 Audience took off and recorded the first of four albums, gigging in many and various corners of planet earth, creating merry and influencing the hippest, whilst charting in Europe, Australia and the U.S. along the way, as well as playing shows with Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, touring with Rod Stewart & The Faces and Jeff Beck (to name but a few), and being supported on a regular basis by bands such as Genesis.
When Howard brought Audience to a close in late 1972 he got to work on his first solo album “King Brilliant” (now reissued on Luminous Records) and it was around the time of this album that Howard was approached by The Doors and asked to fill the space left by Jim Morrison. Howard spent some time rehearsing with them, but after some agonising and deliberation, Ray Manzarek decided against The Doors reforming. However Howard was later to reunite with Ray in Hollywood, where they worked together extensively on Howard’s songs, some of which would later be re-worked to form the basis of the album “Six Of One and Half a Dozen of the other”, which was originally released on Howard’s own METAbop! label, in conjuction with Jake Riviera, Elvis Costello’s manager and business partner, the man who started Stiff Records.
Howard has also worked extensively in Los Angeles with members of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, as well as producing the first recordings by X, L.A’s proto-punk outfit, who were later (coincidentally) to be produced by Ray Manzarek. Howard also recorded some of his own work on the Dangerhouse label during this period, two tracks of which - “Obsolete” and “Mangoman” - have been added to his album “Six Of One and Half a Dozen of the other”.
A London-based band who were popular on the club and college circuit. After an album for Polydor, which is now rare and sought-after because it was withdrawn soon after its release, they were signed to Charisma after they were spotted by the label's boss Tony Stratton-Smith supporting Led Zeppelin at the Lyceum in London.
Friend's Friend's Friend and The House On The Hill were both creative and worthwhile rock albums. Both, especially the former, are dominated by the outstanding sax and flute playing of Keith Gemmell and Werth's strong and rather unusual vocals. Shel Talmy was lined up to produce the Friend's Friend's Friend album but declined at the last moment because he didn't like some of the material. He was looking for a big commercial album and while tracks like Belladonna Moonshine and It Brings A Tear probably appealed to him many of the others (e.g. Raid) were more experimental and didn't. As a result the band ended up producing the album themselves. Their Indian Summer 45, which sold quite well in the States, and the House On The Hill album were produced by Gus Dudgeon. This had a cover version (I've Put A Spell On You) but otherwise, like the first two, was made up of self-penned material including the R&B Jackdaw and the gentler I Had A Dream.
The band toured America with The Faces and built up a good underground following there. The line-up was augmented for the Lunch album by Nick Judd and American sessionmen Bobby Keys and Jim Price. This was probably their magnum opus but after its release personality rifts, particularly between Keith Gemmell and the rest of the band, ripped them apart.
They also performed the score for the 'Bronco Bullfrog' movie (also released under the name 'Angel Lane') which was written by Howard Werth. It was a film shot in the East End with a team of kids from a theatre, none of whom were professional actors.
After the band split, Gemmel joined Sammy; Werth apparently went to the US in an attempt to make music with the surviving Doors members, before returning to the UK. In 1975 he recorded as Howard Werth and The Moonbeams. Trevor Williams went on to Jonathan Kelly's Outside, and then The Nashville Teens; Connor first joined Jackson Heights and then Hot Chocolate; and Judd joined first Sharks (May '73 - Jul '74), then The Andy Fraser Band, eventually becoming a session musician.

SWF Sessions 1973, is a compilation of live in-studio performances for German radio. The cuts include a 12 minute version of the band's masterpiece "Life Is Only" and a brilliant version of the Zappa composition "King Kong." In addition, a 13 minute concert performance of the band's previously unreleased "Make Up Your Mind" clearly shows the direction of the band’s early work, featuring the incredible musicianship of Jeff Beer on the Hammond organ.
Founded in summer 1971 in Germany by German organ player Jeff Beer, Dutch guitarist Rob Terstall and English bass player Ray Brown and drummer Stuart Fordham. This is high level guitar and organ dominated progressive rock. After the release of thier one and only album on Vertigo in 1972, ODIN were invited by German radio SWF to produce 4 titles for a radio show in February 1973. A 12-minutes version of "Live is only" and a 11-minutes version of the Zappa composition "King Kong" are fine examples for ODIN's terrific musicianship.
"Oh no" (6:30) and the Terstall composition "Turnpike lane" make the radio recording session complete. In addition to the radio recordings there is a bonus track from a concert in autumn 1971 titled "Make up your mind" (13:10) which is an impressive example of the bands early works. All titles are digitally remastered. The booklet contains a comprehensive band history with a lot of rare photos.

Odin, like NEKTAR was a British band residing in Germany. While NEKTAR received some success (especially the United States when Passport Records showed an interest in their music), ODIN simply released one album, disappeared, and has pretty much been ignored. The album was released on the swirl Vertigo label, and due to its obscurity, one of the more desired titles on the label. While NEKTAR sometimes flirted with Krautrock styles (often so far as being called Krautrock, even if they weren't German), ODIN mainly stuck to a heavy guitar/organ-dominated prog style that was typical of the British scene of the early '70s. The band consisted of Jeff Beer on keyboards, Ray Brown on bass, Stuart Fordham on drums, and Rob Terstall on guitar, all credited to vocal duties, aside from the drummer.
If you love the sound of the Hammond organ, this album is a total must, often Jeff Beer played his organ with fuzz tone, not unlike DEEP PURPLE's Jon Lord, or Peter Robinson's work with QUATERMASS (whose style was much closer to Lord's in that band than say, when he was in BRAND X, which was much more similar to Robin Lumley's). In fact the band so much as covers a QUATERMASS song as well!
The album starts off with "Life Is Only", a totally killer piece stuffed with cool guitar and organ solos. There are some passages that bear more than a passing resemblance to ELP, in fact it's the only piece on the album to feature ELP-like passages. "Tribute to Frank" is a jazzy instrumental that brings to mind some of ZAPPA's instrumental works, so unsurprisingly the tribute would be to Frank ZAPPA. "Turnpike Lane" features a lot of wordless vocals, and at times almost reminding me of certain Italian prog bands. Of course, the guitar and organ solos are more typical of British bands. "Be the Man You Are" finds the band doing a nice, laid-back acoustic piece. Certainly the vocals are no CSNY, but still a nice piece. Then there's the cover of QUATERMASS' "Gemini". If you know the original, you'll find they pretty much stick to the original, except they added on guitars (since of course ODIN featured a guitarist and QUATERMASS didn't), and an extended solo the original didn't have. "Eucalyptus" is a rather laid-back instrumental piece with some early string synth (presumably a Freeman, as it's too early for the Elka or Solina, and the Eminent, which was around in '72, didn't seem to get much use outside of Italy and France). "Clown" goes back to the heavy style that is most typical for this band.
The album was luckily reissued on CD, and given the kind of music this is, this album would be perfect for Repertoire Records out of Germany to reissue. Instead a small German label called Living in the Past got a hold of it, making it not as easy to get a hold of, but if you can find a copy, get it!
Certainly the music is dated, the heavy organ/guitar format of the music makes it obvious that this was the early '70s, but as long as the music is great, as this album demostrates, I don't care.
Truly an amazing and forgotten gem of British prog. If you like early '70s guitar/organ- driven prog, this album is a total must!

The album released by Haze featured another of those extraordinary artwork sleeves designed by Walter Seyffer of Nine Days' Wonder fame. It was made to look exactly like a slide picture, complete with die-cut cover and an attached transparency picture center of the group Haze on both its front and back covers. What you get here is a photo reproduction of that artwork. Hazecolor-Dia was a Hauke & Dierks production, recorded during April 1971 at the Clerks Studio. All five tracks were written by Dietmar Low. Slow, cleverly-arranged heavy progressive rock numbers, psychedelically fueled with a faint blues tinge, featuring humorous lyrics: A Way To Find Paradise told about a hippy's struggle to get his hashish to smoke! Scherler really had a strange and wild voice (he usually screamed as loudly as he could), adding much to their gutsy freak rock style. Several tracks also featured flute (the flute player is not identified on the cover). Haze, in part, seem to draw inspiration from The Edgar Broughton Band, Arthur Brown, and Captain Beefheart. Their album is recommended for all freak rock fans!

Another lost band that deserves more attention as their music can be categorized under progressive rock boundary.CZAR music is I think a blend of Procol Harum, The Beatles and Pink Floyd (Syd Barrett era) or I would simply say it’s a psychedelic prog rock. In terms of structure, their music is quite straight forward like typical rock music structure. Melody-wise there are some similarities with classic band at their generation (late sixties and seventies). The composition comprises the use of keyboard / mellotrons / organs that represent the tradition of early prog music. Even though the sonic quality is not top notch, but it’s still quite OK with my ears. Even this kind of sound has its unique nuance to indicate the early prog era. Overall, CZAR music is accessible to most listeners. For those who followed the early inception of prog music in the rock music industry in the seventies, this is an excellent addition to any prog collection, I would say.

The Danish band Wuthering Heights writes really catchy songs. The group's fourth album blends progressive metal with folk and power metal and several other influences. Tommy Hansen (Helloween) produced The Shadow Cabinet. The songs are long and complex with plenty of blazing guitar solos. Wuthering Heights moves easily between genres, but I think they are at their strongest when the folk elements are emphasized, and the weakest when they get into the power metal area.
The band's folk influenced songs are the most unique, and also the most memorable. They have the musicianship to pull off the progressive parts as well. They play power metal just fine, but it's very generic and nothing spectacular.
Vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson has a strong voice with a lot of power and range. He's rock solid, but has a tendency to have an overdramatic delivery that has the danger to go over the top.

Out of Darkness - 1970 - Selftitled (Rare UK Hardrock)

Originally signed to Key Records in 1969 the band recorded one studio LP ‘Out of Darkness’ and a live set on the ATV Mobile in Manchester, during 1970 UK ‘Sound Vision’ tour. The LP is regarded as an outstanding example of late 60s/early 70s rock music and is, at a price, highly collectable. This album changing hands for over £250.
Back in the early '70's, OUT OF DARKNESS were pioneers in fusing the sound of rock to the gospel message.. Long gone, they've not been forgotten as was demonstrated by the speed with which their limited edition from-the-archives release on Plankton was snapped up. Andrew Long spoke to the band's one time drummer Tim Anderson.
In the early years of British Christian music, after the first wave of turtle-necked troubadours began to perform 'Christian beat music' in fishnet-festooned Christian coffee bars, Out Of Darkness emerged onto the scene in 1969. The band were the seminal Christian rock band of the early '70's. Pioneers in their field, pumping out a cocktail of soul, gospel and Hendrix-style rock and cited as the inspiration for bands like U2 and The Alarm.
The original line-up of Out Of Darkness was formed in 1969, the various members coming from three bands, The Pilgrims, The Soul Seekers and Insight. Tim picked up the story. "Key Records had known about us as musicians before we came together as a group and they were very interested in us. The Soul Seekers were one of Britain's first black gospel groups and they had toured the continent and released several records. The Pilgrims had also released several singles and I had become a session drummer. Key Records offered us a deal after we had been playing together for only four days."
Soon the band went on to tour with other Key recording artists, which resulted in the live 'Sound Vision' compilation album on which they were featured. Out Of Darkness created huge waves of excitement at every venue they played and were quickly installed into the City Of London recording studios where they laid down the tracks for their eponymously titled debut album.
The line-up at the time was Wray Powell on guitar, Carl Grant on bass and congos, Tony Goodman on vocals and Tim on drums, who also contributed a hammer and wirecutters track to one song. The album was recorded on a basic eight-track machine and was completed in a week. It sold very well on the 'Sound Vision' tour and through record shops and bookshops as well as mail order. It was the best selling gospel album of 1970. However these were early days for the industry and the numbers sold were relatively small.
Interest in the band continued to grow. Out Of Darkness were playing in the major clubs in London like The Flamingo and The Marquee as well as getting good slots at many large festivals including Reading, Phun City and The Jesus Revolution in Edinburgh, which was recorded by the BBC. But there was always an element of controversy as Tim explained to me.
"Wherever we played audiences became very excited, some people would run to the front, whilst others would walk out. Some Christians could not cope and rock audiences were taken back by the spiritual content in the songs. The racial mixture and Christian element caused a culture shock reaction. We sparked off a press debate and began to receive letters looking for an explanation. Key Records began to have second thoughts. But the people who really understood and appreciated us were other musicians and artists. Cliff Richard explaines to his audiences that Christians could play 'underground ' music. The members of After The Fire met at one of our gigs and Steve Fairnie became a close friend. Last summer I played a gig with Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and he sang 'Cocaine' to me to show that he remembered and liked the song."
When Tony Goodman left and Wray Powell took over as vocalist the band rehearse a completely new set which Tim describes as sounding very much like Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies. Bruce Duncan joined as bass player so that Carl could play percussion and piano. It was during this period that the band reached their peak of creativity. But the major recording contract remained as elusive as ever and they eventually disbanded in 1974. Wray Powell had left to follow a solo career, he had apparently been demoing for a major label and they came to a point where they had to decide between signing him or another artist. They signed the other artist, whose name was Joan Armatrading. Nevertheless Wray went on to have a successful career and eventually bought a farm in Jamaica, where he settled.
Carl, Denver and Bruce all emigrated to Canada to follow various careers whilst Tim stayed in Britain where he is now a senior lecturer in Movement Studies and the Performing Arts at Southwark College.
Meanwhile the 'Out Of Darkness' album was creating srits of interest in the collector's market because it was both very good and very rare. It increased in value again and again and is currently listed in the Music Master Guide at £300. A chance discussion with Simon Law of Plankton Records led Tim to dig out some tapes the band had recorded in 1972 at the Celebration Club in Kent at the close of a tour. Plankton arranged for producer Nigel Palmer to work on the tapes and in 1993 'The Celebration Club Session' was released, 21 years after being recorded. The CD only release was restricted strictly to 1,000 copies to snare the interest of the collectors market.
The material on the CD reveals a band that had matured significantly since the debut album. The Hendrix influence is overwhelming, indeed Tim considers Wray to be 'the British Hendrix'. The six tracks stretch into mammoth rock improvisations taking in the soul, jazz, gospel and African elements that make them that little bit different.
Tim told me that the possibility of a reunion gig is not as unlikely as it may seem. In the meantime he is busy playing in Sky Church, a Hendrix tribute band with guitarist Keith Olyva and ex-Clapton bassist Dave Markee. Tim and his wife, Edna Duffin also run the Big Top at the Greenbelt Festival and Tim sometimes sits in as a drummer there.
"If the interest in OOD continues," Tim concluded, "there may be more material that could be released, for example one evening in 1971 we played as a five-piece with Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green."

Mostly Autumn is a British band, producing music heavily influenced by classic 70s rock, most obviously Genesis and Pink Floyd, and folk music. More recent albums have also included more contemporary influences.

The band took everyone by surprise in December by releasing Music Inspired by the Lord of the Rings (Classic Rock Legends (UK) CRL084, 2002) It is also known as the Unexpected Album. This is a shameless, though worthy, attempt to cash in on the media profile surrounding the film of the same name. The album was hastily assembled--it was written, recorded, mixed and mastered in two weeks--and as you would expect, it has a slightly rough, unfinished quality to it, with many of the songs tending to peter out. Nonetheless, considering the time constraints, the band and particularly bandleader and lead guitarist, Bryan Josh, have done a remarkable job, and there is some marvellous music here.

At the time of their first recording, pioneering New Wave of British Heavy Metal group Samson consisted of guitarist Paul Samson, bassist Chris Aylmer, drummer Thunderstick (real name: Barry Graham; concealed his identity by wearing a gimp-style mask), and vocalist Bruce Bruce, better known as Bruce Dickinson. The group got most of its attention playing with Iron Maiden, but this backfired when Bruce Bruce left Samson (UK) to join them, adopting his real name (the pseudonym was a joke conceived by other members of the band and their management that Bruce was never entirely comfortable with). Thunderstick had also left the group at this point, and the band underwent several personnel turnovers over the course of the '80s.The band Samson has recorded and toured under numerous other names throughout the years including Paul Samson, Paul Samson's Empire, Metallic Blue, and Joint Forces.

French band THE VIETNAM VETERANS were part of the neo-psychedelic wave of the 1980's. One of their more pop oriented outings was this cover version of David McWilliams' 1967 original. It served also as their swansong, as the band broke up shortly after this album was complete. The Days Of Pearly Spencer really should have been a bigger hit in it's original 1967 incarnation as well as in this improved-on-the-original cover version. The BEST Pshychedelic Song Ever............. Magical Power Mako - 1975 - Super Record

Magical Power Mako is a japanese psychedelic/ avant garde artist. Since his recorded debut in the early 1970s, Mako has covered genres as diverse and disparate as traditional japanese folk, acid folk/rock,experimental, krautrock, prog, and more recently ambient music. His albums ‘Magical Power Mako’ (Polydor 1974) and ‘Super Record’ (Polydor 1975) are considered among the most important japanese underground rock releases of all time.Super Record, the second of Magical Power Mako's 20-plus recordings, is considered by those that know to be his finest, combining strong elements of Japanese folk music alongside innovative psychedelic sounds and broad musical vistas of extraordinary imagination. Mako was born in Shuzeni Izu in Japan in 1956, and after commencing his musical education at a young age, making his first public performance in 1973 at the age of 16 with his band Genge in the famous Shibuya Club. Based on these impressive public performances, the precocious Mako was invited to play with one of Japan's foremost contemporary composers, Toru Takemistu, playing alongside the composer in 3 film scores, Inheritance For The Future, Petrified Forest and Himiko. The response to his performances was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, elevating Mako to almost god-like status in his native country. 14 tracks.New UK reissue of the second (and all-time best) Mako album, originally issued by Japanese Polydor in 1975; there have been a couple Japanese CD reissues of this in the past, which are no longer available. One of the key documents of Japanese underground psychedelic music, presented in truly sublime fashion. Although MPM went on to record 20+ more records after this one, he would never exceed the spatial exuberance of Super Record. From the liner notes: "Mako's music possesses a certain strange kind of texture. It's certainly is what they call rock, but contains elements that we can't describe so succinctly. It clearly goes beyond the various genres of music, and while full of them all, it sends forth a fierce glow. This 'Super Record' shows Mako looking down upon the earth from above, wandering through Alaska and Siberia, the Near East, Okinawa, and South America. Adding to the variety of folk music of India, Turkey, and Russia, his mandolin or Taisho koto, and especially his marvelously performed guitar, expressing fully the odor of the soil and mankind's universality." Psychedelic Japanese rockers Magical Power Mako released SUPER RECORD in 1975. The album includes the songs "Andromeda" and "Silk Road."
