The band was co-founded by keyboardist Tony Kaye after he left Yes, with David Foster. Foster had been in The
Warriors with Jon Anderson before Anderson co-founded Yes. Foster later worked with the band on Time and a Word.
Kaye had worked on a solo project by Foster that was never released.

The pair found drummer Roy Dyke, formerly of Ashton, Gardner & Dyke, and Dyke suggested Brian Parrish on guitar.
The new band signed to Atlantic Records.

Badger's first release was the live album, One Live Badger, co-produced by Jon Anderson and Geoffrey Haslam, and
was taken from a show opening for Yes. In the progressive rock genre, five of the songs were co-written by the
whole band, with a sixth by Parrish.

The early '70s marked the heyday of progressive rock — it seemed like every time you turned around and everywhere
you looked, there were top-flight bands like Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, et al., all
around, and their emulators and lesser rivals spreading out as far as the eye could see. Badger was part of that
whole scene, a Yes offshoot group that managed to get signed by the same label. Officially, the group's origins go
back to 1972 and Tony Kaye's departure from Flash, the group he'd co-founded with his fellow ex-Yes alumni, guitar
ist Peter Banks. Kaye was a virtuoso who favored more traditional instruments such as the Hammond organ over the
more modern Moog synthesizer (not that he didn't play the latter, but he used the organ more prominently), and who
had the bad fortune to have been succeeded in Yes by the much flashier Rick Wakeman. This time out, he was going
to put together his own progressive rock supergroup, on a firmer footing than Flash (whose work had sometimes
strayed too close to that of Yes).

The ex-Yes keyboard player called on his longtime friend David Foster, who had managed to skirt the orbit of Yes
several times without ever being asked into that lineup (in part because his instrument was the bass, and Yes was
incredibly well covered in that department by Chris Squire). Foster had been a member of the Warriors, Yes lead
singer Jon Anderson's mid-'60s group, and had co-authored songs with Anderson on Yes' second album, Time and a Word.
Kaye had ended up working with Foster on what was ultimately to be an unreleased Foster album — when Kaye quit Yes
in 1971, he initially joined Banks in founding Flash, but after his exit from the latter, Kaye and Foster decided
to finally take the plunge. They recruited drummer Roy Dyke, lately a member of Family and, before that, Ashton,
Gardner & Dyke — he was a Liverpool veteran whose career went back to the early '60s and the Remo 4 and Brian
Epstein protege Tommy Quickly, and had played on one hit single, Ashton, Gardner & Dyke's "Resurrection Shuffle";
he, in turn, steered the organizers to Brian Parrish, an ex-member of Medicine Head and Three Man Army, who had
played with Paul Gurvitz and Mike Kellie in an outfit called Parrish & Gurvitz, who'd cut one LP for Regal
Zonophone.

The quartet, christened Badger, fit together perfectly, and after some rehearsals began building a name for itself
on a European tour opening for Black Sabbath. The band was signed by Atlantic Records, which already had Yes and
saw Badger as potentially offering another group of the same caliber. When it came time to record an album, however,
it was decided that nothing they tried in the studio was capturing the intensity and involvement they demonstrated
on-stage, and that a live album was the best way to introduce Badger. A show at the Rainbow Theatre, opening for a
now well-established Yes, was recorded, produced by Jon Anderson and Geoffrey Haslam. One Live Badger did rather
better in Europe than it did in America, though it got strong reviews everywhere. Perhaps if it had come out at
another time — and not in the same season that the first wave of progressive rock albums from ELP's Manticore label
was being released, with lots of publicity and advertising support — it might've done better, and a single might've
been a help (even Yes had needed "Roundabout" to find a mass audience). By 1974, Badger was reduced to Kaye and
Dyke, who reconstructed the group along somewhat different lines with the addition of Paul Pilnick, late of
Stealers Wheel, on lead guitar, Kim Gardner (of Ashton, Gardner & Dyke) on bass, and ex-Apple alumnus Jackie Lomax
on vocals.

In essence, it became Lomax's group, and he pushed the band away from progressive rock and into soul in a serious
way; Badger's second album, White Lady, was made up entirely of songs co-authored by Lomax, and produced in New Or
leans at Allen Toussaint's studio. The change in direction would have been difficult enough to pull off under the
best of conditions, but stability wasn't one of Badger's long suits at this date — the group had split up before
White Lady was even issued, leaving bewildered fans of both the old sound and new to ponder what had just happened.
Pilnick later returned to the orbit of Stealers Wheel's Joe Egan and Parrish went on to cut a solo album, while
Lomax signed with Capitol for two solo albums and Dyke passed through bands behind Pat Travers and jazz veteran
Chris Barber. Tony Kaye was a member of Detective and later passed through a re-formed version of Badfinger before
re-emerging with Yes in the 1980s, and even got to sing a little on the Union album. Finally, a quarter century
after it was recorded, One Live Badger was re-released on CD by Repertoire Records, as part of that label's
re-examination of the best progressive rock of the 1970s.

One Live Badger is the easier Badger album to find, and the one worth having anyway. As the album's title
indicates, the band also took the unusual step of making their first album a live recording of original songs. It
has aged very well — with all the energy of live performance, there's none of the usual studio excesses or noodling
of the era. The Yes connection via Tony Kaye is abundantly evident; the album was co-produced by Yes singer Jon
Anderson, uses long instrumental breaks and prominent Hammond organ solos, and features the obligatory Roger Dean
cover art. Nonetheless, the brooding lyrics and soulful harmonies make comparisons to Traffic and Blind Faith a
much closer musical match. The first half of the album is excellent, kicking off with the pleasingly hoarse vocals
of David Foster on the full-tilt rocker "Wheel of Fortune" and the pensive "Fountain." There's an especially tight
rhythm section underlying the restrained guitar work of "Wind of Change," combining to produce the album's best
song. But the second half of the album, with rather mopy numbers like "The Preacher," doesn't quite keep up this
momentum.

Far Out - 1973 -- Nihonjin (Outstanding Progressive Rock From Japan)

This early 70's psychedelic Japanese quartet were more or less the precursors of The FAR EAST FAMILY BAND (see this band's biography), guitarist/vocalist Fumio Miyashita being the only link between the two. Miyashita would later join other musicians on FEFB which included among their ranks Masanori Takahashi, better known as "Kitaro". Under the name FAR OUT, they released one album in 1973.
Although « Nihonjin » is definitely a spacey album, the keyboards are only prominent on the opening notes and the synths are used sparingly throughout, for the occasional sound effect. The psychedelic atmosphere comes mostly from the guitars, electric sitar and drums, resulting in a sound somewhat reminiscent of PINK FLOYD's "A Saucerful of Secrets". The original LP, replete with weird sound effects, consisted of two epic tracks clocking in at 18 and 20 minutes respectively. The 7 bonus tracks of the CD edition are actually taken from The FAR EAST FAMILY BAND's first album "The Cave Down to the Earth" and feature some Japanese vocals that turn out in English on "The Cave" album. These tracks also lack the spacey synths of the latter.
The flow of psychedelic that happened in the latter half of the 1960's visits Japan at once and has extended. At that time, the power to involve demonstrated the power of the counterplan enough as cultures such as music and the arts and plays. An original custom of Japan and the thought of the Orient exactly appeared enough to the music of psychedelic in Japan. Or, the deriving music exhausted the musician in various Japan as one flow. A lot of bands in Japan influenced by the music of the United States and Britain for the situation of Japanese music at that time existed and the band in known Japan existed as a result of digesting those elements also in the world now. Members of the band in various Japan created original music in the one flow while studying hard mutually valuing the flow. And, it was one band to which this "Far Out" had started also establishing an original route in the flow of such music. It was at 1971 that they were formed. It is said that they were performing music that exactly receives the influence of Hard Rock at that time and makes Rock a center. However, the music character has been improved while gradually taking the element of psychedelic. The band in a lot of Japan made original music of Japan absorb the music such as psychedelic, Blues, and Rock and created without limiting the activity such as bands of Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and psychedelic of the other to the band in Japan and influencing and limiting it to them.
In the back, this band to which Fumio Miya[&*!#]a is mainly formed will change the form into "Far East Family Band". It is known as a band of the antecedent to the arrival there. However, the listener who knew this band became in the minority also in Japan now. However, it is likely to be able to count as one of the bands that support the dawn of the music of Japan very important band.
Involved power and flow of "Too Many People" create one space. The culture and the thought of the Orient in Japan might be reflected well though it looks like the sound of initial Pink Floyd and King Crimson. The progress of the sound of the float in the space exactly feels the sound of psychedelic and a few Blues. The guitar of Eiichi Sayu will exactly invite the listener to the world of psychedelic.
"Nihonjin" can be translated into "Japanese". The entire flow of the album is united. The culture and the thought of the Orient are reflected in music as for this tune. It advances with quiet power and progress.
In Japan at that time, such a lot of bands existed. If the situation of music the meaning of the existence of this band and at that time is considered, it is likely to be able to enjoy it as one of the bands to which Japan is psychedelically related though this band certainly becomes a mother's body and it connected with Far East Family Band.

About Harlan Cage
.
Harlan Cage was one of the first bands MTM Records had the honour to present when they started back in 1996. The band is based around former Fortune (US) singer L. A. Greene and keyboardman Roger Scott Craig. Founded in the summer of 1994, the band was originally known in the Los Angeles area as Big City, and included Richie Onori on drums, Brian Peters on bass and Michael Langlan on guitar. In the September of 1995, after Big City had parted ways, Magnus Soderkvist, (then with Empire Records in Sweden), heard a demo tape of the band and contacted Larry Greene through a publicist in California. It was at that time that Larry and Roger formed a union together to form what is now Harlan Cage.
.
Already well known throughout Europe and Japan from the MCA Fortune LP , Greene and Craig picked up their writing talents with a combined effort to recreate the melodic rock from those years, mixed with the lyrics and attitude which accompany todayOs top bands, and wrote, performed and produced three of the top CDOs applauded by fans and critics alike everywhere that rock music is truly appreciated.
.
.
Harlan Cage is very Popular In Hellas.

Dull Knife were a German band who attempted to combine Deep Purple-influenced hard rock with some soul in the vein of Joe Cocker. To be honest, I think their first and only album "Electric Indian" is mostly forgettable. There's nothing wrong with the technical abilities of the group. They played heavy and powerful, with lots of good guitar, organ and drumming. The problem is mainly the mediocre material that fails to impress me very much. The opener "Plastic People" (absolutely nothing to do with Birth Control's excellent song and album of the same name) has lots of heavy riffs, sudden breaks and lengthy solos, but it never evolves into anything that really grabs me. The same can be said about "Tumberlin' Down" and "Walk Along the Muddy Road". The riffs and melodies are simply too average and unoriginal. But far worse are the more soul-inflected songs, such as "Go Down to the River", "Lonely is the Mankind (Without Love)" and "Song of a Slave". All of these ones are boring beyond belief. The closer "Day of Wrath" is the only song on the LP that really tries to fuse the two different styles, but the tedious songwriting again spoils something that could have been a bit original and unusual after all. There is also some distorted effect on the vocals that becomes a bit annoying after a while, especially as it goes on for most of the album.
Getting scare German hardrock blaster with the same vibes as Hairy Chapter . Completely great sounding. Reissue on CD by the heavy German psychedelic rock band Electric Indian originally released in 1971. Engineered by Dieter Dierks it is an essential item of the German underground hard rock scene with heavy riffs and treated vocals on tracks like "Plastic People" and "Song of a Slave".

There are some albums that are meant to be experienced, while walking alone somewhere, out away from the sounds and lights of the city. In a certain sense alone on the roadside as the passing lights of cars, fade and are beckoned by the urban air of modern life. While this is certainly nostalgic statement and possibly even a romanticized viewpoint, I can honestly see it, as ideal circumstances for listening to “Where at night the wood grouse plays”. Call me a sucker for the songs of bards and lutes and flutes, but this album gets a hundred points for being simply beautiful music.I can’t get the whole image of the medieval bard out of my head, singing at a festival in some European country, recalling stories of the distant past. While this is certainly not a metal album by any means, for the past three years I’ve owned my copy, it’s always had the same becalming effect. For any music lover it’s an album I recommend dearly, and without much further ado, I’ll get to why it’s so simplistically effective. Empyrium however, sadly no longer exist to create the beautiful atmosphere present on this albumAs mentioned by the prior reviews the album is entirely acoustic in it’s performance, this is with the inclusion of lutes and flutes in the titletrack and “Many moons ago”. The entire pace of the album is noticeably very slow and melancholic, with the dissonant male vocals singing in a low pitch in the background. “The Shepherd and the Maiden ghost” best illustrates the effect of both vocalists, with the deeper vocalist whispering amid the acoustic picking. While the main complaint happens to be the lower pitched male vocalist, I can’t say he did any harm in my experience. The choral vocals in the background add for a very haunting effect, such as in “Wehmut” where the vocals chant and the lute faithfully chimes in with it’s light-hearted tone. I can certainly understand the frustration with the choral vocals, “When shadows grow longer” is probably the best example, but as mentioned, it is my opinion they only add to the somberness of the music. The natural elements of the album such as the wind on the titletrack, and the various lute interludes, make the album surreal. I cannot imagine the album without any of the elements subtracted from the equation, even the removal of the vocalists, would make the album less than it is. For standout tracks I recall “The Sad song of the wind”, the titletrack, and “Many moons ago” as being the most memorable. The other tracks are beautiful in their own right, with “A pastoral theme” being the most uplifting track mentioned.Empyrium orchestrates a very nostalgic and wistful atmosphere on this album, one that I have only recently experienced again in listening to the work of Drudkh. While it may not appease those craving extremity, it will certainly calm those who want an album to listen to, while wandering about in their respective country. I recommend it to anyone that adores acoustic music; or anyone that just wants to listen to something different.

Dies Irae were a heavy progressive group who recorded their sole album 'First' for Pilz before the label fell into the hands of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser. Dominated by blues, 'First' is a heavy progressive effort owing much to the heavy blues sound and occult nature of Black Sabbath's debut album. Song titles such as 'Lucifer', 'Harmagedon Dragonlove', and 'Witches Meeting' display the groups interest in the dark side. The standout track for krautrock fans is sure to be the seven-minute freak out 'Trip'. A spacey track, 'Trip' begins with an outstanding electronic collage which gives way to a peaceful free flowing jam containing acid-drenched celestial vocals.
Fans of the heavy progressive sound will find 'Lucifer' and 'Witches Meeting' to be the best cuts. 'Lucifer' contains an ultra aggressive guitar and harmonica riff slightly reminiscent of 'The Wizard' from 'Black Sabbath'. 'Witches Meeting', an extended track encompassing numerous musical sections, contains a rocking guitar solo and a furious ending. As a whole, the album is sure to please most fans with its heavy nature.

Little known UK group who recorded this rare and only album in Germany 1971. Dark Progressive With Flutes, Occasional Saxes Etc. A Bit In The Vein Of Gravytrain With Some Folky Tunes In Their Music As Well. Going for high prices in auctions Recommended!!
Their only LP, "High Tones", was recorded in 1971, in London, produced by Hugh Murphy and Shel Talmy (THE WHO); but never released because of 'comercial' reasons. An unauthorized edition was released in Germany by Bellaphon. When the members found out about this, in the mid 1990's, they legally fought back property and re-released the album with Sunrise Records, Europe). Music runs from folk tunes to excessive instrumentation, including flute, sax and chorus sang by three of the members of the band, passing through jazz-fusion and complex time composing. GENTLE GIANT's choruses run similarly to DIABOLUS'; flute sound takes them close to JETHRO TULL. Sax prefigures later PINK FLOYD sound, but while in PF sax is "invited" in DIABOLUS it comes as part of the whole. Some of the tunes approach electric jazz through the use of broken times and an open drumming, with moments of total free improvisation.

The Japanese progrock band COSMOS FACTORY made a sery of albums in the Seventies with every time another sound. I prefer their debut-album "An Old Castle Of Transylvania" (1973). The long title track (around 20 minutes) is a mind blowing blend of psychedelia and progrock with great build ups and eruptions, very compelling with strong hints from early PINK FLOYD but the swirling movements also brings the long live tracks from URIAH HEEP, DEEP PURPLE, IRON BUTTERFLY, VANILLA FUDGE and Krautrock like early JANE and ELOY on my mind.
It contains sumptuous keyboard play including heavy floods of Hammond organ and Mellotron along biting guitar. The interplay between guitar and organ is like "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" from PINK FLOYD. The other songs are also loaded with Hammond and Mellotron, a real 'keyboard nirvana' for the fans of 'vintage keyboards'.
Formed in 1970, in the ugly industrial city of Nagoya, from the ruins of GS outfit The Silencer, this progressive rock band was courted by a local rock critic who took the band under his managerial wing. They played the local scene for a couple of years before gaining anything more than local success. Cosmos Factory took their marvellous name from a wholly cosmic misreading of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s LP COSMO’S FACTORY, which has unfortunately led many to believe that they were a space rock band. Instead, they were just a fairly bombastic bunch with a good line in titles. Their best LP is the debut AN OLD CASTLE IN TRANSYLVANNIA, but even this is keyboard heavy in an Italian progressive style, and only the epic title track that closes the album enters the realms of real experiment. Otherwise, their work dwells in the same areas as The Nice, Arzachel and early King Crimson. The band finally made its name as support for The Moody Blues and signed to Columbia Records in 1973, releasing the aforementioned debut that same year.
Thereafter, the band signed a better deal with Toshiba’s hip Express label, and embarked on the unusual policy of releasing EPs. First came FANTASTIC MIRROR, followed by THE INFINITE UNIVERSE OF YOUR MIND and DAYS IN THE PAST, each appearing throughout 1975. Their second LP A JOURNEY WITH COSMOS FACTORY was released the same year. Film soundtrack work altered their music somewhat, giving it a harder, more clinical edge, and the musical arrangements of their final LPs BLACKHOLE and METAL REFLECTION were more Spartan than the previously lush arrangements of earlier albums, and not heavy metal as the titles would suggest. Cosmos Factory’s name and fabulous album titles are the main reason for the band’s inclusion here.

Good early British soft progressive symphonic that will appeal to fans of Cressida, Moody Blues, Barclay James Harvest and Spring. The album varies between quite catchy numbers like "You Are", "April 73'" and "Brotherly Love" to more mellow and melancholic songs like "Seasons", "Song for Tavish" and "A Prayer". The latter seems to be a song about trans-sexuality! "Title Track" is a two-part track, and probably the most progressive song here. The arrangements are very nice and tasteful with organ, mellotron and real strings. No plastic crap. And the songwriting is very strong and inspired through the whole album. This is not complex progressive, but good old melody-based, British soft progressive that anyone who likes good melodies will enjoy.
The album is a significant collector's item among fans of progressive music. The Geordie band financed the album themselves and paid for 1,000 copies to be released. Musically it's competent progressive symphonic rock with mellotrons etc. very much in the mould of bands like Yes. The later reissue on Five Hours Back should be easier to obtain and will save you quite a lot of money. It retained the original gatefold sleeve and more recently the album has been issued on CD with bonus tracks. They also recorded a second album Future Shock (Shock 1) 1977.

What should I do when I'm waiting for my daughter, Dian, going back from school activity? Oh I'd better go to the coffee shop, open my laptop and write a review on Colosseum's "Daughter of Time" album. Well, it seems the album title fits with the situation I'm currently having: waiting (something to do with "time") for my "daughter" finishing the school activity. Hope I can finish this review just before a call from her. Hm. So sorry, it's just an introduction - nothing to do with the music of Colosseum at all. It's just an indication how prog rules my life. Yeah - I live, I breathe, I work with prog music .
This album was actually not recommended by my colleague proggers because according to them, this one is not as powerful as Valentyne Suite or Live albums. But for the sake of having a complete set of Colosseum album, I bought it anyway. To my surprise, the music of this album is truly meeting my taste and I can see that the musical quality of this album is at par excellent as the band's Valentyne Suite. In general, the music is so classic where I can hear may styles of seventies sounds blending the classic rock style, jazz, as well as blues. It's really a gem for me. So many organ sounds that remind me to old days sound like those played by Brian Auger, Ekseption, etc.
Track 1 "Three Score And Ten, Amen" (5:36) has an intro that gives an impression of somewhat KING CRIMSON's music of "In The Court of Crimson King" album especially on the nuance created by mellotron-like sound. But it's not truly King Crimson as when the vocal enters the scene it gives an impression of the like of CHASE, CHICAGO Transit Authority or Blood Sweat & Tears. Of course they don't sound exactly the same but the style is similar. The tight bass lines by Mark Clarke seems like bringing the beat of the song combined with excellent brass section and powerful vocal line by Chris Farlowe, which sometimes sings in high register notes. The style and tempo changes have formed the music in cohesive way.
"Time Lament" (6:04) starts off with a string orchestra in relatively complex arrangements with excellent combination of brass section wonderfully played by Dick-Heckstall Smith and Barbara Thompson. Well, who doesn't know Barbara Thompson and Dick-Heckstall Smith? They are both excellent brass instruments players. When vocal enters the song, it seems very obvious how the music has shifted into a blues-based music with powerful vocal line. The rest of the track shows great combination of brass section and dynamic drum-work by Jon Hiseman. Excellent track!
Track 3 "Take Me Back To Doomsday" (4:26) starts with piano exploration by Dave Greenslade in a jazzy mode. The electric guitar played by Clem Clempson brings the music in faster tempo followed with duo vocals. "Take me back . take me back .". The album title "The Daughter Of Time" (3:30) starts somewhat complex with circus-like music followed with distorted guitar solo and brass section that slashes afterwards. The vocal enters in classic style backed with rhythm section which comprises combination of powerful brass section and organ. I do enjoy the combined work of guitar solo and brass section. It's really excellent.
"Theme For An Imaginary Western" (4:05) opens with vocal line in relatively high register note augmented with acoustic guitar and organ sound that reminds me to the music of Procol Harum. Oh yeah, this tune sounds like PROCOL HARUM's. It's cool, especially when I hear the organ sound and electric guitar fills. Oh my God . I like this track very much.
"Bring Out Your Dead" (4:25) opens with keyboard / organ sounds that remind me to the music of The NICE. The organ work is really stunning, combined with dynamic drumming by Jon Hiseman and electric guitar. Vibes take its part during transition pieces. It's an excellent instrumental track. "Downhill And Shadows" (6:11) enters with sax solo in relatively long duration (1 minute) followed with drum, bass and guitar that form a truly great blues music. The vocal line enters with a lyric of "From now on ." oh . this is really great!!!! Yeah man, it's one of my favorites blues music especially with the use of brass section to accentuate the music and stunning guitar fills and solo. Oh I'd better sip my coffee now commemorating the wonderful blues beats this track offers. It's really awesome!!! And . the guitar solo is fantastic. Clem Clempson rules!!! The vocal is also powerful.
"The Time Machine" (8:12) is a live track that concludes the album. As usual, it's performed with high energy and it's very dynamic. Look at how the drum set is played wonderfully by Jon Hiseman. Well, I'm sure Jon is one of the best rock drummers that I have ever known. He has a lot of variations in how he combines the snare, bass drum as well as tom tam. It's really great and very enjoyable.
Folks, what can I say about this legendary album after I have been listening to it many times and written long review? Of course, it's a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED prog album that you must have. Don't miss it. As for the sonic quality, this is the seventies record so don't expect something really good coming out of this record. But with this kind of sound I really have an emotional bound with the album because it casts the memorable time of the glory days of rock music during my childhood. Keep on proggin' ..!

.
From the psychedelic tribal blues opener "Dark Road" through to the end of the album, Christopher shows just how strong the second-level psychedelia of the late '60s could be. There was no shortage of great musicians hailing from Texas during the era, and the ones that remained in the state were forming some of the most idiosyncratic bands of the swirling, inventive times: top-flight bands such as Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Lost & Found, the Golden Dawn, and Christopher. Christopher, though, cannot exactly be lumped together with those peers. They had to leave Texas for California to make their mark, and indeed, Christopher owes a good deal to the music of that state — songs such as "Magic Cycles" and "In Your Time" are informed by the dreamier qualities of the San Francisco sound, especially the extended atmospherics of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. There are also hints of fellow Los Angeles bands the Doors and Spirit throughout the album, and like the best music coming out of California, the songs on Christopher sound somehow revolutionary and foreboding, as if there is something dark lurking just beneath the surface of the music. Occasionally Christopher occupied similar musical territory as Cream.
They were not unfamiliar with the blues, and, like the British supergroup, they were an absurdly powerful three-piece with an abundance of ability in both instrumental and songwriting proficiency. In addition, Doug Walden's vocals are a dead ringer for Jack Bruce. With that said, the album actually sounds quite different from Cream. Christopher are somehow both more mystical and earthy. "Dark Road" starts out with a loping, jazzy blues groove before being propelled forward by a tempo change and some brilliant, musical drumming. "Wilbur Lite" seems grounded by some slashing chording by Richard Avitts, but then an open-ended melody and upward bass progression raise the song up off its legs.
"Queen Mary" rolls along on top of a choppy drum beat and bass groove until Waldren's phenomenal spine-tingling vocals soar above the music, uncontainable. The music itself, however, never spins out of restraint. The songs are all relatively succinct, never growing excessive or dull, and Avitts' guitar playing is economical. The lyrics can get a bit pretentious here and there, but that doesn't even really qualify as a minor flaw since it is a product of ambitiousness and the era. Christopher is one of the finer albums to have fallen completely through the cracks of the '60s, and Christopher one of the era's best forgotten bands. One wishes that they had stuck around long enough to create more music.

This is the second album by the German band Empyrium.
Elaborating on their previous full-length album, A Wintersunset... released a year before, with Songs of Moors... Empyrium delve into a more sophisticated intricacy of what is sometimes called "romantic metal", offering a complicated mix of percussion, flutes, bass guitars and synths, together with its will-be trademark deep baritone male vocals performed by Schwadorf himself (who also plays virtually all the instrument parties, except for keyboards).
The album contains some of Empyrium's longest tracks (e.g. Track 3), presenting a more epic-like musical texture. By many the album is deemed as a true masterpiece of melancholic, dramatical metal.
...
"This is music that effects a precipitous ambiance of vast landscapes of natural beauty that always brings sentimental sadness and haunting impressions to the beholder. It speaks of the frigid desperation of experiential anguish and delicate yet crushing weight of emotional affectations and lamentations, and aches for the uncultivatable essence of nature. Empyrium have crafted a divine work of emotional and absolutely invigorating musical art." [Review at Encyclopedia Metallum]

.

First-ever reissue of hard rock monster and 1975 debut Lp from Minnesota's CAIN! A hard rock fan's dream with Lloyd Forsberg's "ahead of their time" guitar licks and Jiggs Lee's raucous vocals. Features a full digital re-mastering along with liner notes, lyrics and photos!
"A Pound Of Flesh" was originally recorded and released in 1975. Today, over thirty years later this debut album by Minnesota rock outfit Cain gets another - well deserved - shot.
Right now in 2003 there's obviously a market for re-releases. Even the pop charts are rarely lacking a cover tune from a seventies, eighties or nineties pop or rock tune. Is the well running that dry folks? Hmmmm.
Though some of these Top 40 cover tunes are amusing, most suck BIG time, so I prefer a re-release of a classic rock album anytime. I'm from '72 myself, so obviously I missed the original release of "A Pound Of Flesh",and unfortunately the band was disbanded soon after their second album. A third never saw the light of day.
Today, "A Pound Of Flesh" will depend entirely on an audience that actively looks for re-releases such as this. That and some decent marketing might well be enough to reach the audience there undoubtedly is for classic seventies rock.
There's quite a few 'older' bands I really enjoy listening to. Queen, The Eagles, The Who... a little bit of everything I guess. The music that Cain plays is hardly 'my thing', but I can't deny that there's a couple of very enjoyable tunes here.
"Katy" shows the excellent singer that Jiggs Lee was to his full extent. Soulful at times, and amazingly powerful at other times. I'm sure he's doing a fine job nowadays being a sound system designer. His musical qualities ooze from every pore of this shiny little disk.
The rest of the band; Dave Elmeer (bass, acoustic, keyboards), Lloyd Forsberg (electric guitar) and drummer Kevin DeRemer complement Jiggs and oneanother perfectly. This band sounds like they could've taken on early Led Zeppelin any given time.
But alas, as I told before, their career was short-lived. Thanks to Monster Records however, what little legacy Cain left behind is - at least partly - available to the public once again.

Here's a record that could use a good cd reissue. Damn solid hard rock slab from these dudes who sound like a cross between Grand Funk Railroad and Deep Purple. Not much in the tune department, but a very enjoyable listen. Plus dig the white guys big fro in the gatefold. That's dedication there, I think his is almost as big as the guy in Steppenwolf.
Originally released in 1971. The debut from this east coast 6-piece features twin-guitars, lots of organ interplay and soaring vocals. A superb bridging of psychedelia and progressive. Highly recommended!!

Comments: Good Scottish Hardrock
.
This 1972 album was previously only available as a hideously rare private pressing. Five tracks of hard and heavy rock, with some outstanding guitar and keyboard work make up the only album from this Scottish band. Akarma CD comes in elaborate fold out "crucifix" hard card sleeve.
On the Comet Records website, were you can purchase this self-titled Bodkin LP, it says "File close to Black Sabbath." This music had no similarities to the heavy metal godfathers' recordings. The only thing that was comparable was the inference to Satanism with the burning cross and the offertory head of a ram.
What you will find most intriguing besides the music however is how the LP was packaged. The sleeve the album comes housed in has so many folds you will think that you are doing origami. The album cover actually folds out into what you see pictured here, and it is quite large. You can use it as a poster if you wish because the actual LP has its own self-contained sleeve built around the poster. There is no doubt that this is one of the more unusual LP's I have had the pleasure to listen to and enjoy from the label since I started covering their product in 2000.
The Hammond Organ is the primary instrument on this LP. The influence of its sound fits principally well within each song. "Aunty Mary's Trashcan," easily the best track on the LP, is nearly 11 minutes long and it illustrates my point perfectly. "Plastic Man" was the only cut where the guitar cuts loose as a featured instrument. All of you six-string aficionados need not being distraught over this as the electric guitar is an essential part of the mix with this music, it just is not as out front as you may be accustomed to.
If you look at the year this was recorded (1972) and where (U.K.) it is obvious what the group was trying to accomplish. They, like many others, were attempting to break new ground and become more progressive utilizing the keyboards as center from where their sound emanated from, while building the rest of the instruments around it. As successful as they were in accomplishing this they never made it as others did from the country. I a most thankful that bands that created such wonderful rock music can be given their just due and remembered with excellent reissues like this one.

With hindsight, it seems as if the Zombies didn't so much come to a halt as split off into two different directions. Colin Blunstone would take the band's poppiest, sweetest elements; Argent would take the gutsier ones, and appropriate the intricate keyboard arrangements (naturally enough, as keyboardist Rod Argent was the leader of both Argent and the Zombies). Neither Blunstone nor Argent would approach the majesty of the Zombies' prime, but they'd offer some pretty fair approximations. And that's what you get on Argent's self-titled debut — a fair approximation of late-period Zombies, with a much heavier hard/progressive rock feel. There's nothing that's nearly as arresting as Odessey and Oracle, but it's not bad at all. Includes Russ Ballard's "Liar," the first Argent track to get heavy airplay in the U.S.
Argent were an English rock band founded in 1968 by keyboardist Rod Argent, formerly of The Zombies.
The first three demos from Argent, recorded in the autumn of 1968 featured Mac MacLeod on bass guitar.
The other original members were bassist Jim Rodford (Rod Argent's cousin and formerly with the Mike Cotton Sound), drummer Robert Henrit and guitarist/keyboardist Russ Ballard (both formerly with The Roulettes and Unit 4 + 2). Lead vocal duties were shared between Ballard and Argent.
Rod Argent, Chris White (former Zombies bassist) and Russ Ballard were the group's songwriters. Some of Ballard's compositions became hits when they were covered by other artists, including Kiss, Rainbow, Hello and Santana.
When Ballard left in 1974, he was replaced by guitarist/vocalist John Verity and guitarist John Grimaldi and there followed a period of intense recording and touring until the band decided to come off the road late in 1976. Rodford, Henrit and Verity briefly continued together under the name Phoenix before going their separate ways, with first Rodford and then Henrit becoming members of The Kinks.
Argent's biggest hit was Rod Argent and Chris White's "Hold Your Head Up"from the All Together Now album, which, in a heavily-edited single form, reached #5 in the U.S. They also recorded the original version of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You", written by Russ Ballard, which was covered by Kiss in 1992 under the name "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II", and featured prominently at the end of the film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. The song also became a Contemporary Christian rock anthem and was twice covered by the Gospel band Petra, in 1977 (on the album Come and Join Us) and again in 1984 (on the album Beat the System), albeit with new verses. The Russ Ballard song "Liar" on Argent's first album became a hit for Three Dog Night.
The sound of the band was a mix of rock and pop, but also covered more progressive rock territory in songs like "The Coming of Kohoutek," an instrumental from their Nexus album. When Ballard left the band after Encore, they took an even more progressive/fusion turn with their final Epic album Circus and then signed to a new record label (United Artists) for the final 1975 album Counterpoints. By 2005, all albums, including compilations, have been re-released on CD, except Counterpoints.

Empyrium started as German symphonic folk/doom metal and later neofolk band founded in 1994 by Markus Stock (mostly using the pseudonym Ulf T. Schwadorf) and Andreas Bach, but later many other participated. Their first two albums, A Wintersunset and Songs of Moors and Misty Fields, following a demo entitled ...Der wie ein Blitz vom Himmel fiel..., can be considered doom metal (or, as some will argue, folk metal) with folk and symphonic influences. They combine harsh and operatic male vocals, with deep slow guitar parts and atmospheric sounds.
It is their second LP.

Alcest biography

ALCEST is a French experimental/ post black metal act formed in 2000 in Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The band started out as a black metal act but has gradually incorporated shoegaze and experimental/ post black metal elements into their sound. ALCEST is basically a one-man act consisting of Neige who compose, sing and play all instruments. ALCEST first release was the "Tristesse Hivernale" demo tape. At this point ALCEST was a three-piece consisting of Neige on Rhythm & Acoustic guitar,Drums, Vocals, Argoth on bass and Hegnor on lead guitar. The two latter are only featured on this release. Neige released the "Le Secret" EP in 2005 and in 2007 ALCEST debut full-length studio album "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde" followed. ALCEST has released some split releases since. Neige also hold membership of other prolific Frech underground acts such as AMESOEURS, PESTE NOIRE and VALFUNDE.

The record is rather short, just about 40 minutes, but nevertheless it offers a lot to discover. The general sound contains the typical swedish elements such as melotron and slight folk influences here and again. The influence of "Landberk" can't be overheard. But Paatos are far from being a Landberk clone. Apart from "Tea" and "They are beautiful" the sound is, despite the melancholia, much heavier and contains more jazz ingredients. The opener "Sensor" shows impressively what you can expect from this album. A relaxed and mellow e-piano opens the song before it shifts to a drifty groove with wild drumming and superp bass, not to forget Petronella Nettermalm's intensive voice. After a bombastic part with nice melotron, follows a cracking instrumental part which ends the song, amazing. "Hypnotique" is the highlight of the album. A dreamy ballad with Petronella's voice in the limilight. After a mellow instrumental part the song get's faster and heavier in the end. Some nice flute, melotron of course and again the awesome drumming which adds the jazzy flair. A great song. "Tea" finally offers swedish vocals, a beautiful, quite mellow song with a jazzy feel to it, mainly because of the rythm group. "They are beautiful" reminds me of the last "Landberk" album "Indian Summer". The booklet offers the information that it was also written by Dimle, Fiske and Helje, all (former) members of "Landberk". The last song "Quits" abducts you abruplty to a quite different world, a very modern one. It commences with antsy programmed Drum'n'Bass rythms, downright remembering me of Trip-Hop. In combination with the vocals even bands like "Portished" come to my mind. Some nice e-piano notes carry to an amazing compount of deep bass melodies, wind instrument inputs and the aforesaid programmed "beats" and e-piano. But that's not everything the song has to offer; the end can be described as wild free- jazz with Van der Graaf like Saxophone chunking, truly absorbing. It's a perfect closure.

Debut album from this Mannheim (west of Frankfurt) quintet (standard prog quartet plus a lead singer and acoustic guitarist) that will have a relatively long life, starting at the dawn of the 70's and ending just before close to the end of it. Their sound was a relatively hard prog rocking album where the organ and guitar alternate at the front of the music, while the English lyrics singing from Werner Stephan is pleasant and apt. Having taken their name from Chinese mythology, and gracing their self titled debut with an heavenly garden scene, this album Starting out with a lengthy Fairy Tales where the organs and guitar trade licks and solos reminiscent of Deep Purple, Wallenstein or Birth Control. Although one of the more pleasant tracks on this album, the song works well but there are lengths and the drum passages is heard-elsewhere. The following slow Sometime is a better track to give you an idea of the typical KPM sound, with delicious organ layers underlining the verses and searing guitars leads between the verses and chorus. While the third track is also a lengthy affair, Don't You Know is again promising but delivering fully. The jam- like instrumental sections are good, but they are a little too brutal of a change from the average song-proper parts. The flipside is much in the same spirit developing a semi-hard rock wherethe short tracks succeed to other mid-length, but there is nothing reallyenthralling, but rest assured nothing boring either. Typically the type of album that needs a few listens before unleashing its treasures; but those riches are not that deep either. Some moments of Drugsen's Trip and My Dove (with Mellotrons) are brilliant, but as with all other tracks, there are many other things to could've been easily bettered thatit is a bit frustrating as usually Conrad Plank-engineered albums hit the spot much easier than KPM's debut. The last two tracks are average rock tracks in the line of what's been done before. The Second Battle reissue comes with bonus tracks from non-album singles and add length to the album, maintaining the general quality level, but not raising it either. Although rather pleasant, I found this album a bit over-rated in its reputation, it is hardly worth the stamp to write home about, either. Not essential, but it won't deface your collection either.

This album is far heavier than the previous Helstar album, with most of the riffs here being thrash metal. There is far more of an Iron Maiden styled gallop to all of the songs, while the lead guitar continues to remain impressive, and James Rivera emits some more of the best shrieks ever recorded.
The highlights include the title track, which starts off pretty slowly, and never really gets past slightly faster than midpaced, but nonethelesssets the tone for this album. "Suicidal Nightmare" has a New York style thrash break (i.e. Nuclear Assault) in the middle, and "Angel of Death" has a really cool solo at the end.
Everything on here is solid - there are no throwaway tracks, and all of the songs are memorable in their own way, though the similarity is much stronger than on the first album. Highly recommended.

Helstar, words cannot describe how amazing this band would become with this powerful debut, and the next three albums to follow. Somehow, like others have said, they seem to get slightly overlooked and people tend to gravitate more towards Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Fates Warning, and other bands of that time. Which is a shame because Helstar could very well be beyond many of those bands in every way. Fans of more rare metal from the early 80's, such as Jag Panzer's "Ample Destruction" or Omen's "Battle Cry", take heed with Helstar and this debut "Burning Star".
One thing that sets Helstar apart from many other bands during the 80's, is that they were always more technically agressive. There's no argueing that Helstar's come up with some of the most original, and coolest riffs ever. And when you get to the complex shredding solo's, it just tears your face up. They are blazing fast, technical, aggressive, melodic, and oustanding. Along with top notch production quality for its time, there's no faults to be found here at all. This album has some of Helstar's greatest songs. The opening "Burning Star" along with the ever so popular"Run with the Pack" are just a few to mention. From the beginning, to theend this is a solid album. There's really no fillers to be found here. Some songs are overall better than others, but every song is unique and keeps a strong sense of Speed Metal consistency.

Electric Sandwich were formed in late 1969 by a group of German students from Bonn. The band initially consisted of four musicians, all of whom had already played with other bands: bass player Klaus Lormann had been playing with "Chaotic Trust"; lead guitarist Jorg Ohlert used to be with "Slaves of Fire"; drummer Wolf Fabian, the founder of the band, had been touring with a band called "Muli and the Misfits", and singer Jochen "Archie" Carthaus sang with the "Flashbacks".Their own material has been recorded into the legendary Dieter Dirks Studio in Stommeln (1973 Brain catalogue). The music contains typical spaced out, freak n roll improvisations with many jazzy rock ingredients, folkish accents and Mellotron excursions. What's so fascinating about "Electric Sandwich" is the fact that each of the seven songs is different from the rest even though the band developed a homogeneous sound concept. Asked about the diversity of styles his band toyed around with, songwriter Ohlert replied: "Electric Sandwich are not limited to one single style of music. We change styles, even in the middle of a song, because we want our music to be alive." To achieve this goal the band not only rehearsed every week but also reserved one evening of the week to discuss their respective creative visions. The lyrics deal with stories that complete a full circle from birth to death. In "Nervous Creek", for example, Electric Sandwich tell the story of a river eventually flowing into the sea. "Material Darkness" deals with the life of a city dweller. In the release information, Wolf Fabian comments: "We deliberately like to create an intellectual attitude. We try to design our lyrics in a way that allows a listener with poor knowledge of English to understand them.

First of all, this isn’t really the creme-de-la-creme of 80’s USPM; there are some good moments, for sure – but it’s no Heir Apparent debut. Dragonne does that sorta power/heavy blend that I guess you could say Leatherwolf and Banshee (especially post debut) do. I mean at times it’s pretty much thrash (‘Catch Me if you Can’), and others it’s a bit more fantasy involved. An interesting mix, with some really great songs, but not as good as it gets. Still, if you’re a fan of the genre, it might pay to give this album a go and see for yourself.
The title track is a gallopy speed metal attempt that thunders along for four and a half minutes, but doesn’t really scream ‘power’ at you. It’s akin to that Iron Maiden instrumental filler track ‘Losfer Words’ (off Powerslave); rumbling bass, riff changes etc, and there’s some serious guitar wank at the end. Totally listenable, but seems a bit lackluster until the final third, where it really kicks off. Still, a pretty good track really, but I feel it would’ve benefited from some over the top USPM shrieks and showing off vocal pitch changes. Things get a bit more conventional in ‘Long Way’ where gang vocal shouts keep that thrash metal vibe I spoke of earlier going. The chorus is actually pretty good here. You have plenty of voices in the chorus itself, giving a nice powerful harmony, coupled with an awesome display of guitar lead after the second chorus. This one sounds more like straight up heavy metal with a slight power influence.
Elsewhere on the album, the slower track ‘Heaven Calls’ slows things down, and calls on a bit more of a USPM vibe. Lyrics are very, very fantasy orientated, while there’s an epic tone, and some really great action in the chorus, with lots of voices contributing to the backup vocals again. This one has a bit of an Iron Maidenish feel – especially given the verse guitar riffs, and the vocal tones (though this singer is no Bruce Dickinson). Anyway, for me this is one of the better tracks, and it’s probably the best one on the album so far at this point. Vocals aren’t exactly fantastic throughout the album, but in tracks like this one he at least gets the job done (hell, he’s better than me). More maiden comes through with the bass tone I reckon, but the guitar solo is again the high point here. Talent.
Basically, despite some good moments, and some pretty thrilling guitar solos – this one isn’t exactly top-notch stuff. The guitarist is talented, and I do like the Iron Maidenish kind of approach they have going on (surprisingly, I don’t hear a lot of Maiden coming through in this sub genre). This one could have benefitted from some slightly better vocals (and much more high shrieks), and more rehearsal by the sounds. Don’t get me wrong, the songs are pretty well written, and complex, but they do feel a bit rough in delivery. ‘Dream Forever’ sounds kinda like Glacier or Leatherwolf a little bit, but not as polished as the latter, and elsewhere ‘Heaven Calls’ and the title track are pretty good. If you’re reading this as a pre-cursor to perhaps getting the album, listen to ‘Dream Forever’ or ‘Heaven Calls’ and see if you take a shine to it. If not, go pick up the Blackstorm (US) demo I reviewed in this series – it kills. On this one there are strong moments here and there, and by no means ‘bad’.

Monster records has discovered another classic 70's rock album, featuring the great Jordan Macarus on guitar. Capturing this great live show from Chicago back in 78' was quite a find. This band would not even release their first studio album for another two years, pretty amazing. Check out "Sanctuary" and the southern stomper "Off the Bat".
Pretty unknown live release by a truly great band from '78. Jordan Macarus is a completely overlooked guitar hero. If you are into Frank Marino, Robin Trower and Rory Gallagher, find this album and buy it!!

What could WA do after such a resounding success as Argus had been and not wanting to make a Son-of-Argus? Well they certainly had the courage to get back to basics and did probably out of pressure of their MCA label, but I believe because they probably felt incapable of furthering what they had achieved just before. So they went back to basics, but unfortunately started paying a price, as this album was also the breaking point of the original line-up as one of the twin-lead guitarist Ted Turner would leave after it, joining religion. Most likely out of frustration for taking such a step backwards!
Because a step backwards this album definitely is: all of the charm of Argus was simply washed away as if inexistent and very unfortunately that spirit will simply never be caught again in their discography even three decades later. Basic rockers sounding a bit as if they had become a more progressive Status Quo, this album does not even have real highlights or peaks, it is just flat down RnR with little inventivity. Best-known track is Persephone Jives, which still gets regular playing live nowadays but it is nothing worth writing home about and barely deserves a space on a compilation or best of. Lacklustre collection of song, this album is the blueprint for many WA albums to come, but at least this one still has the merit of having the original line-up.
