The Danish band Wuthering Heights writes really catchy songs. The group's fourth album blends progressive metal with folk and power metal and several other influences. Tommy Hansen (Helloween) produced The Shadow Cabinet. The songs are long and complex with plenty of blazing guitar solos. Wuthering Heights moves easily between genres, but I think they are at their strongest when the folk elements are emphasized, and the weakest when they get into the power metal area.
The band's folk influenced songs are the most unique, and also the most memorable. They have the musicianship to pull off the progressive parts as well. They play power metal just fine, but it's very generic and nothing spectacular.
Vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson has a strong voice with a lot of power and range. He's rock solid, but has a tendency to have an overdramatic delivery that has the danger to go over the top.

Out of Darkness - 1970 - Selftitled (Rare UK Hardrock)

Originally signed to Key Records in 1969 the band recorded one studio LP ‘Out of Darkness’ and a live set on the ATV Mobile in Manchester, during 1970 UK ‘Sound Vision’ tour. The LP is regarded as an outstanding example of late 60s/early 70s rock music and is, at a price, highly collectable. This album changing hands for over £250.
Back in the early '70's, OUT OF DARKNESS were pioneers in fusing the sound of rock to the gospel message.. Long gone, they've not been forgotten as was demonstrated by the speed with which their limited edition from-the-archives release on Plankton was snapped up. Andrew Long spoke to the band's one time drummer Tim Anderson.
In the early years of British Christian music, after the first wave of turtle-necked troubadours began to perform 'Christian beat music' in fishnet-festooned Christian coffee bars, Out Of Darkness emerged onto the scene in 1969. The band were the seminal Christian rock band of the early '70's. Pioneers in their field, pumping out a cocktail of soul, gospel and Hendrix-style rock and cited as the inspiration for bands like U2 and The Alarm.
The original line-up of Out Of Darkness was formed in 1969, the various members coming from three bands, The Pilgrims, The Soul Seekers and Insight. Tim picked up the story. "Key Records had known about us as musicians before we came together as a group and they were very interested in us. The Soul Seekers were one of Britain's first black gospel groups and they had toured the continent and released several records. The Pilgrims had also released several singles and I had become a session drummer. Key Records offered us a deal after we had been playing together for only four days."
Soon the band went on to tour with other Key recording artists, which resulted in the live 'Sound Vision' compilation album on which they were featured. Out Of Darkness created huge waves of excitement at every venue they played and were quickly installed into the City Of London recording studios where they laid down the tracks for their eponymously titled debut album.
The line-up at the time was Wray Powell on guitar, Carl Grant on bass and congos, Tony Goodman on vocals and Tim on drums, who also contributed a hammer and wirecutters track to one song. The album was recorded on a basic eight-track machine and was completed in a week. It sold very well on the 'Sound Vision' tour and through record shops and bookshops as well as mail order. It was the best selling gospel album of 1970. However these were early days for the industry and the numbers sold were relatively small.
Interest in the band continued to grow. Out Of Darkness were playing in the major clubs in London like The Flamingo and The Marquee as well as getting good slots at many large festivals including Reading, Phun City and The Jesus Revolution in Edinburgh, which was recorded by the BBC. But there was always an element of controversy as Tim explained to me.
"Wherever we played audiences became very excited, some people would run to the front, whilst others would walk out. Some Christians could not cope and rock audiences were taken back by the spiritual content in the songs. The racial mixture and Christian element caused a culture shock reaction. We sparked off a press debate and began to receive letters looking for an explanation. Key Records began to have second thoughts. But the people who really understood and appreciated us were other musicians and artists. Cliff Richard explaines to his audiences that Christians could play 'underground ' music. The members of After The Fire met at one of our gigs and Steve Fairnie became a close friend. Last summer I played a gig with Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and he sang 'Cocaine' to me to show that he remembered and liked the song."
When Tony Goodman left and Wray Powell took over as vocalist the band rehearse a completely new set which Tim describes as sounding very much like Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies. Bruce Duncan joined as bass player so that Carl could play percussion and piano. It was during this period that the band reached their peak of creativity. But the major recording contract remained as elusive as ever and they eventually disbanded in 1974. Wray Powell had left to follow a solo career, he had apparently been demoing for a major label and they came to a point where they had to decide between signing him or another artist. They signed the other artist, whose name was Joan Armatrading. Nevertheless Wray went on to have a successful career and eventually bought a farm in Jamaica, where he settled.
Carl, Denver and Bruce all emigrated to Canada to follow various careers whilst Tim stayed in Britain where he is now a senior lecturer in Movement Studies and the Performing Arts at Southwark College.
Meanwhile the 'Out Of Darkness' album was creating srits of interest in the collector's market because it was both very good and very rare. It increased in value again and again and is currently listed in the Music Master Guide at £300. A chance discussion with Simon Law of Plankton Records led Tim to dig out some tapes the band had recorded in 1972 at the Celebration Club in Kent at the close of a tour. Plankton arranged for producer Nigel Palmer to work on the tapes and in 1993 'The Celebration Club Session' was released, 21 years after being recorded. The CD only release was restricted strictly to 1,000 copies to snare the interest of the collectors market.
The material on the CD reveals a band that had matured significantly since the debut album. The Hendrix influence is overwhelming, indeed Tim considers Wray to be 'the British Hendrix'. The six tracks stretch into mammoth rock improvisations taking in the soul, jazz, gospel and African elements that make them that little bit different.
Tim told me that the possibility of a reunion gig is not as unlikely as it may seem. In the meantime he is busy playing in Sky Church, a Hendrix tribute band with guitarist Keith Olyva and ex-Clapton bassist Dave Markee. Tim and his wife, Edna Duffin also run the Big Top at the Greenbelt Festival and Tim sometimes sits in as a drummer there.
"If the interest in OOD continues," Tim concluded, "there may be more material that could be released, for example one evening in 1971 we played as a five-piece with Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green."

Mostly Autumn is a British band, producing music heavily influenced by classic 70s rock, most obviously Genesis and Pink Floyd, and folk music. More recent albums have also included more contemporary influences.

The band took everyone by surprise in December by releasing Music Inspired by the Lord of the Rings (Classic Rock Legends (UK) CRL084, 2002) It is also known as the Unexpected Album. This is a shameless, though worthy, attempt to cash in on the media profile surrounding the film of the same name. The album was hastily assembled--it was written, recorded, mixed and mastered in two weeks--and as you would expect, it has a slightly rough, unfinished quality to it, with many of the songs tending to peter out. Nonetheless, considering the time constraints, the band and particularly bandleader and lead guitarist, Bryan Josh, have done a remarkable job, and there is some marvellous music here.

At the time of their first recording, pioneering New Wave of British Heavy Metal group Samson consisted of guitarist Paul Samson, bassist Chris Aylmer, drummer Thunderstick (real name: Barry Graham; concealed his identity by wearing a gimp-style mask), and vocalist Bruce Bruce, better known as Bruce Dickinson. The group got most of its attention playing with Iron Maiden, but this backfired when Bruce Bruce left Samson (UK) to join them, adopting his real name (the pseudonym was a joke conceived by other members of the band and their management that Bruce was never entirely comfortable with). Thunderstick had also left the group at this point, and the band underwent several personnel turnovers over the course of the '80s.The band Samson has recorded and toured under numerous other names throughout the years including Paul Samson, Paul Samson's Empire, Metallic Blue, and Joint Forces.

French band THE VIETNAM VETERANS were part of the neo-psychedelic wave of the 1980's. One of their more pop oriented outings was this cover version of David McWilliams' 1967 original. It served also as their swansong, as the band broke up shortly after this album was complete. The Days Of Pearly Spencer really should have been a bigger hit in it's original 1967 incarnation as well as in this improved-on-the-original cover version. The BEST Pshychedelic Song Ever............. Magical Power Mako - 1975 - Super Record

Magical Power Mako is a japanese psychedelic/ avant garde artist. Since his recorded debut in the early 1970s, Mako has covered genres as diverse and disparate as traditional japanese folk, acid folk/rock,experimental, krautrock, prog, and more recently ambient music. His albums ‘Magical Power Mako’ (Polydor 1974) and ‘Super Record’ (Polydor 1975) are considered among the most important japanese underground rock releases of all time.Super Record, the second of Magical Power Mako's 20-plus recordings, is considered by those that know to be his finest, combining strong elements of Japanese folk music alongside innovative psychedelic sounds and broad musical vistas of extraordinary imagination. Mako was born in Shuzeni Izu in Japan in 1956, and after commencing his musical education at a young age, making his first public performance in 1973 at the age of 16 with his band Genge in the famous Shibuya Club. Based on these impressive public performances, the precocious Mako was invited to play with one of Japan's foremost contemporary composers, Toru Takemistu, playing alongside the composer in 3 film scores, Inheritance For The Future, Petrified Forest and Himiko. The response to his performances was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, elevating Mako to almost god-like status in his native country. 14 tracks.New UK reissue of the second (and all-time best) Mako album, originally issued by Japanese Polydor in 1975; there have been a couple Japanese CD reissues of this in the past, which are no longer available. One of the key documents of Japanese underground psychedelic music, presented in truly sublime fashion. Although MPM went on to record 20+ more records after this one, he would never exceed the spatial exuberance of Super Record. From the liner notes: "Mako's music possesses a certain strange kind of texture. It's certainly is what they call rock, but contains elements that we can't describe so succinctly. It clearly goes beyond the various genres of music, and while full of them all, it sends forth a fierce glow. This 'Super Record' shows Mako looking down upon the earth from above, wandering through Alaska and Siberia, the Near East, Okinawa, and South America. Adding to the variety of folk music of India, Turkey, and Russia, his mandolin or Taisho koto, and especially his marvelously performed guitar, expressing fully the odor of the soil and mankind's universality." Psychedelic Japanese rockers Magical Power Mako released SUPER RECORD in 1975. The album includes the songs "Andromeda" and "Silk Road."

......
On their second album, Wishbone Ash still haven’t figured out whether they’re a blues-based boogie-rock band (as witnessed on two of the album’s lengthier songs, “Jail Bait” and the live recorded “Where Were You Tomorrow”) or something else (the other songs), but it’s a fact that these guys were WAY too talented to be just another blooze & booze-band, and I’m not trying to be condescending towards bands like Grand Funk Railroad or Status Quo, who for the most part (no, not always) of their careers kept churning out songs based on the good old, familiar pattern, it’s just that these four musicians are so talented that I don’t get why they’re no longer (or rarely) praised anymore. Both Andy Powell and Ted Turner were guitar players with an awesome technique and capable of delivering some impossibly fluid soloing as well as bottom-heavy chords bashing, while bass player Martin Turner and drummer Steve Upton deserve to be placed among the great rhythm sections of classic rock (yes, that implies very near Moon/Entwistle, Baker/Bruce, etc), as they effortlessly incorporated elements from jazz and folk into their rock mould. The greatest example of their unique fusion is “The Pilgrim.” Even though it starts out as another folk-inflected tune, with a slow build-up and ‘mysterious’ atmosphere, it turns into an entirely different matter after three minutes, when angular guitar accents introduce the twisted rhythm that the bass and drums soon pick up. It’s stuff that hovers somewhere in between prog (awkward time signatures), hard rock, jazz and even folk, with the harmonizing of the musicians betraying their British roots. It’s during songs as this one, songs that are unfortunately the hardest to describe, that the band shows its uniqueness to full effect.
There’s nothing as unusual as this track on Pilgrimage, even though there’s plenty to enjoy. Album opener “Vas Dis,” which also boasts a jazzy rhythm and contrary accents is less spectacular than “The Pilgrim,” but the remarkable thing about it are the scat vocals that mimick the guitar parts. It’s something I’ve heard only a few bands do, but it usually cracks me up, and there’s some great soloing. “Alone” and “Lullaby” are short instrumentals (2:20 and 2:59, punk lengths!!) and while both are really pretty, especially “Lullaby”, because it lives up to its title, it’s hard not to consider them as a sort of ‘elevated filler’. Much better, and an essential album track, is “Valediction,” which shows how great their harmonies could be (and usually were). None of these guys was a particularly great vocalist, but they could create an imposing sense of melancholy by blending their voices. The song’s structure is quite predictable and it never offers any surprises, but it’s a winner by the sheer smoothness of the playing and the unreal atmosphere that’s kept up for more than six minutes. Then there’s the more conventional stuff: “Jail Bait” is a pretty straightforward boogie, featuring mainly a lot of soloing, and essentially the same is true for the 10-minute “Where Were You Tomorrow” which has a fierceness the studio track lacks. It’s performed with style, energy and skill to spare – you know how it goes: fierce rhythms, passionate solo, quiet moment, rise to climax, return to starting point, etc – but it’s just no match for the band’s best stuff, when they transcend the confines of conformity with genre-bending opuses that combine the best from several worlds. That’s also why the album isn’t a masterpiece: there’s some good stuff, but one third of it is standard (but excellently performed!) stuff, while another part is ranked in the vicinity of ‘enjoyable filler’. They’d go on to fully explore their capabilities though, and with great results. In the meantime, about half of Pilgrimage is recommended to anyone with a soft spot for jam-oriented ‘70’s rock. Yeah, I’m looking at you, pothead stoner boy.

New Jersey's TT Quick broke thru the metal underground in 1984, upon the release of their self-titled EP. Demonstrating arresting chops, vocal prowess and solid writing, the band were quick to land a major label deal with Island Records just two years later. In that time, drummer Glen Evans bailed ship and joined Nuclear Assault. Though its unlikely the lineup shift had much to do with the band's writing, subsequent albums just never seemed to meet the promise of that first EP.

Released: 1973

You can't deny Procol Harum their important place in rock's scheme of things. They were the first to bring together the energy and mood of American rhythm and blues and the intensive bigness of European romantic music. At their height, they were as mysterious and as powerful as any artist, black or white (I thought at the time that "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was Percy Sledge's follow-up to "When a Man Loves a Woman" until I was told it was some English guy stealing from Bach). Their first and third albums, Procol Harum (just reissued by A&M as A Whiter Shade of Pale) and A Salty Dog, contain some of the most stirring moments in popular music.
The ultra-pompous title track says it all, in fact: a beautiful, romantic keyboard intro, grandiose lyrics ('tonight we sleep on silken sheets' and suchlike), orchestrated arrangements and quotations from waltzes and 'Otchi chyornije' (one of the few well-known Russian gypsy songs, if you're not familiar). The quotations might seem somewhat banal and out of place, but the melody itself, along the lines of 'A Salty Dog' but still somewhat different, is gorgeous - nobody could pull off such pomp and totally get away with it like good old Procol. Everybody knows how hard it is to write a bombastic, orchestrated ode and make it impressive as well. But these guys were really really talented, and Brooker has an amazing talent of dealing with classical music without any special education.

They are one of the longest serving Italian bands, for many years now ARACHNES deliver their brand of music in quite rapid succession and even though they, too, are part of the Power Metal-movement, they still are not the typical Melodic Speed that you normally are used to from there.
The quartet uses a lot more classical elements in their sound and also very variably use tempo and intensity, what helps the song-material, because it prevents them from getting uniform and this boring. Especially in the first third ARACHNES truly can excel, with a balanced mix from fast crackers and emotional tracks (I just say "Prayer (Part 1)"!), also vocally they can convince, instrumentally you can't complain anyway.
