Super rare UK progressive from the late '60s. Leaning in a psych direction with Doors like keyboards, 'Tull like flute, long tracks, quality vocals, varied instrumentation etc. This was Raw Material's self-titled maiden voyage in the studio, they would release one more album in 1971 titled Time Is. The sound created on this album was not as intense or complex as their second outing but it is a glimpse at what they would become.
This music was progressive but will most likely be looked upon as pre-progressive (i.e. Yes, Pink Floyd) by most fans and critics. Colin Catt, the vocalist and keyboard player, set the tone for the band with his trilling vocal style and Jon Lord/Deep Purple influenced keyboard playing.
Although this album has some of the fusion and jazz elements present, it is not a prevalent as their second album. Rock seems to be the foundation that everything else stems from on their freshman outing. It remains as a fine example of early prog-rock with the use of the flute, sax and harp. Although this may not be the best album that you have heard from that period of time it is good and worth checking out.

The will-o'-the-wisp, sometimes will-o'-wisp or ignis fatuus Latin, from ignis ("fire") + fatuus ("foolish"), plural ignes fatui) refers to the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight — often over bogs. It looks like a flickering lamp, and is sometimes said to recede if approached. Much folklore surrounds the legend, but science has offered several potential explanations.
The term will-o'-the-wisp comes from wisp, a bundle of sticks or paper sometimes used as a torch, and will-o' ("Will of").
The folklore phenomenon will-o'-the-wisp (Will of the wisp) is sometimes referred to as Jack o' lantern (Jack of the lantern), and indeed the two terms were originally synonymous. In fact the names "Jacky Lantern" and "Jack the Lantern" are still present in the oral tradition of Newfoundland. These lights are also sometimes referred to as "corpse candles" or "hobby lanterns", two monikers found in the Denham Tracts. They are often called spooklights or ghost lights by folklorists and paranormal enthusiasts in the United States. Sometimes the phenomenon is classified by the observer as a ghost, fairy, or elemental, and a different name is used. Briggs' "A Dictionary of Fairies" provides an extensive list of other names for the same phenomenon though the place they are observed (graveyard, bogs etc.) influences the naming considerably.

This was the last, and probably most rewarding, album from Germany’s Empyrium. Their unique neofolk sound remains intact for their final outing, with greater emphasis on atmosphere and dramatic vocal delivery. The haunting German chants, acoustic interludes, piano keys and swelling strings work together in fluid, transcendent compositions, underpinned by swift, subtle drumming. The occasional flute, horn and brass accompaniment is also welcomed and lends many of these songs a certain grandiosity.
Weiland’s sound is full of mystery, nostalgia and catharsis, as delicate guitar passages lead out into orchestral climaxes and back again, laying out emotional processions into the wild unknown. The use of baroque choir-like harmonies (use again recalling the early work of Ulver) is chillingly effective, moving Empyrium closer to their neoclassical aspirations.
Weiland comes across as an almost ancient experience, whether through raspy whispers or a bellowing tenor, evoking some lost connection to a natural spirit. Empyrium’s project is instrumentally complex and riveting and manages to stake its territory at the forefront of the neofolk genre. While their sound is dark and moody, Empyrium manages to play a stable balancing act between delicacy and aggressive release. There may not be any clear standouts on this disc to return to casually, as everything blends together in a cohesive form, demanding full, meditative attention. The power and beauty of this album is well worth the time still. This is evening music with intense, contemplative energy and showcases Empryium at the height of their creative powers.

May Blitz were formed in England during the early part of 1969. Tony Newman ex Jeff Beck Group actually formed the band recruiting James Black & Reid Hudson. Black and Hudson were Canadians from Victoria, British Columbia who pioneered Canadian West Coast music prior to moving to England. The band played extensively on the UK college circuit in 1969 before signing to Vertigo. Their debut album 'May Blitz' in 1970 was heavy and featured a grotesque cartoon cover. The first album sold moderately and a follow up 'The 2nd Of May' was recorded in 1971. Unfortunately despite being an excellent album full of heavy original numbers the album flopped. The band were dropped by Vertigo shortly after. Black and Hudson disappeared into oblivion (They actually returned to Canada after the break up of May Blitz) but Newman played with many bands throughout the 70's including Three Man Army, Marc Bolan, David Bowie & Mick Ronson, Chris Spedding and David Coverdale's Whitesnake. Both of their albums are in high demand on the collectors market. In 1992 both of the albums were remastered onto CD. Sadly one of the UK's lost treasures. Their music lives on through collectors and fans worldwide.
The original line-up of May Blitz, formed in 1969, contained guitarist/vocalist Jamie Black and ex-Bakerloo members: bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker. However, before any recording took place, Poole left for a career in session work (Graham Bond, Vinegar Joe) and Baker accepted an offer to join Uriah Heep, appearing on their "Salisbury" LP. Reid Hudson therefore took over the bass duties whilst ex-Sounds Incorporated/Jeff Beck Group stickman Tony Newman took over the drum stool.
The trio's aggressive out'n'out hard rock style brought them to the attention of progressive label Vertigo Records who saw May Blitz as being in the same vein as Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, both of whom were signed to the label. Their debut self-titled LP (Vertigo 6360 007) was released in mid-1970 and contained seven lengthy self-composed tracks, distinguished by the use of echoed feedback guitar playing from Black. Though not a chart success, original vinyl copies of the album complete with gatefold sleeve and Vertigo's famous 'swirl' logo, now command prices of 50 British Pounds and up on the collectors' market. Just over six months later, in early 1971, they released their second LP, "The 2nd of May" (Vertigo 6360 037) which again came in a highly collectable gatefold sleeve. However, the eight tracks, again, mostly written by all three members, failed to live up to the power and excitement of the first album and so shortly after its release they disbanded.
Tony Newman joined Three Man Army and appeared on the LPs, "Three Man Army" and "Two" before forming Boxer with Mike Patto and releasing "Below the Belt" and "Bloodletting" albums. He also worked with the likes of David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Mick Ronson, Whitesnake and Chris Spedding and has remained an in-demand session musician. As for Jamie Black and Reid Hudson, it would seem they disappeared form music altogether.

Firebird is the band led by Bill Steer from Napalm Death and Carcass.
The sound of Firebird is about a million miles away from the other groups that Steer has been a member of. You won’t find death metal on “Deluxe”. Firebird’s sound has a 70’s rock vibe with a stoner rock element that leans heavily towards acts like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Black Sabbath. What amazes me about “Deluxe” is the huge sound on this record. For only a three piece band, the music is pretty awesome. The production quality is a little off, but there is no doubt after listening to these tunes, that Bill Steer is a huge, largely unknown talent. His guitar wizardry on this album needs to be heard to be appreciated.

This is a concept album based on interpretations of a book like the Dead Sea Scrolls and/or the Bible’s Book Of Revelation. It’s a very interesting presentation because the songs are joined by haunting narratives between the songs yet each song can stand alone as a single. These narratives (by Rob Brown) are short but they add an extra layer to the sensory overload the music delivers.

Continuing in the vein of TERRIFIED, Quiet Riot comes back again with another solid Hard Rock album for the ’90s. Classic Rock flavored, blues-based, and structured party anthems. It’s not all mid-tempo this time around, there are some faster tunes here that nod to the ’80s heyday, a combination of old and new.
Two things really jump out at me when listening to this record: Just like the previous album, DuBrow sings outside of his trademark delivery, it’s more soulful and bluesy in a Glenn Hughes sort of way. Second, Carlos Cavazo puts in another superb guitar performance showing that he is under-rated and overlooked in the scene.
Some solid songs here: ‘Dig’, ‘Pretty Pack Of Lies’, ‘Trouble Again’, ‘Voodoo Brew’ (interesting keyboards here), ‘Twisted’. All are very good, straight to the point, Hard Rock. The rest of the album is as straight forward as these selections except for the obligatory cover of The Kinks’ classic, ’All Day And All Of The Night’, which is done well but unnecessary. ‘Hell Or High Water’ has that ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’/Pete Townshend type intro, a nod to the roots.
This was released in 1995 and I remember seeing the CD in the New Release rack at my local Circuit City for $9.99. Of course this was pre-Internet, my only news was the Rock mags and zines, I didn’t remember news of a new QR album. If you look at the cover, the band name is missing but the trademark mask is there, a casual fan might not give it a second glance. I almost missed out on this but that artwork really drew me in, one of the best I’d seen in a long time and the best the band has ever had.
Bottom Line:Straight up Hard Rock done well. It’s the same sound that you identify as Quiet Riot but bluesy. Well worth checking out. Favorite songs: ‘Pretty Pack Of Lies’, ‘Voodoo Brew’, ‘Trouble Again’.

Hardly a coincidence that Ken Hensley came with a debut album in 1973. His creative peak, that was the time when URIAH HEEP reached their pinnacle, having released in 1972 fantastic double-shot of "Demons And Wizards" and "The Magician's Birthday" and being on the threshold of "Sweet Freedom", which was the reason why "Proud Words" didn't receive due appraisal. Recorded with support from HEEP's rhythm section, Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake, the album is both close to the band's output and as far removed from it, judging on the opening "When Evening Comes". Blues signals the guitar direction rather than keyboards-based one might expect from Hensley. Off romantic verses, intensity builds up to three guitar layers measuring the emotional depth on to liquid solo. Still, bar-room piano paves a way for a tad bleak "A King Without A Throne" Thain covers with his ornaments.

Last Saturday I was taking a walk to Brussels center and I bumped up to a vinyl record music shop. After a while I had found myself searching records. This was paradise. And suddenly I saw it. In flesh and blood. Just infront of me. I grabed it. A vinyl record that worth its money. I didn’t ask how much. I have just taken it. Superb, a masterpiece. If you are aware of ELOY multiply by 10 and you have Ramses!
Four of the most successful Rock Groups of Germany come from Hannover, Eloy, Jane, Scorpions and "Ramses". It was been proven that, at the time, the guitar metropolis was also able to produce talents, what before was only found in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. . The quintet "Ramses" was the youngest of these groups. Although "Ramses" was formed in the winter of 1972. The band's name had been created by the former first guitar player who used to love old Egypt culture, one of it's kings being Ramses II. In the first two years the band underwent some changes. The final formation was only reached in the beginning of 1974, after the testing of several drummers, in personal before the First LP "La Leyla" and second "Eternity Rise" - team had established.

Clark-Hutchinson's debut album had been devoted entirely to long, tiresome psychedelic guitar instrumentals with Indian and blues-rock influences. On their second record, although some of that approach was retained, they at least branched out to some degree, adding some vocals and somewhat more deranged blues-rock tangents. And guess what? It's still indulgent psychedelic hard rock, often annoyingly so, all but one of the five tracks falling into the seven- to ten-minute range. It's some of the most lunkheaded stoner rock you'll come across, and if that seems like a churlishly unfair label, it's one they bring onto themselves with the first cut, "Free to Be Stoned."
For it's here they fly their inept freak flag high, a from-the-gutter, hysterical vocal declaring against a crude blues-rock backing, "I don't wanna be good, but I don't care if I'm bad, I don't want to feel happy, but I don't care if I feel sad...I just wanna be...STONED! STONED! STONED! STONED! For the rest of my natural life!" Just the kind of guy you want to hang out with for next half-hour, huh? The attitude-over-songwriting ethos continues to rule over most of the other tracks, including a tepid ten-minute cocktail jazz instrumental, a ten-minute standard blues-rocker featuring (like "Free to Be Stoned") some of the most disagreeably half-shouted British blues-rock vocals ever laid down, and a finale ("Death, the Lover") that comes off like a particularly bad Arthur Brown imitation in its high-pitched vocal and lyrical mania. To continue our Quiet Riot story.............
Fed up with DuBrow's antics, the rest of Quiet Riot fired him from his own band in early 1987 and replaced him with former Rough Cutt vocalist Paul Shortino. Wright was also fired and was replaced by Sean McNabb. The band released Quiet Riot in 1988, which was another poor seller. This 1988 album technically has the same name as their original first album with Randy Rhoads. After a tour that ended in Hawaii in 1989, the band members went their separate ways; DuBrow fought to keep control of the name.
By 1990, tempers had cooled enough for the former bandmates to communicate. DuBrow and Cavazo formed Heat with bassist Kenny Hillery and drummer Bobby Rondinelli, but eventually became Quiet Riot again in 1991 and released Terrified(1993) with Banali rejoining. Quiet Riot, with Chuck Wright again on bass, hit the road in 1994 in support of 'Terrified' with Wisconsin's Slam I Am.

From Miami, Florida, this band's first LP is well worth a listen if you're into the 'West Coast sound' format, though they're closer sound-wise to Big Brother than Jefferson Airplane.
A strident female lead vocalist called Lydia belting it out and sounding not unlike her namesake - Lydia Pense - of Cold Blood. Some searing guitar and quite a hard rockin' style with more blues rather than folk influences.
This is an amazing piece of music, more like Iron Butterfly than Iron Butterfly! It lumbers and soars and crashes back to earth. "Stoned Cowboy" is mid tempo powerhouse psychedelia, with not a voice in earshot, thank you! Huge production, a very catchy riff, and an avoidably magnetic performance that uses reverb in a relatively aquatic fashion.
Stoned Cowboy, an instrumental, received considerable airplay in Miami / Detroit at the time and was on heavy rotation on KIMN-AM in Denver.
They were later known as Year One and their first 45 was non-album.

Quiet Riot is an album released in 1988 by the band Quiet Riot. This is the only Quiet Riot album which features Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, The Cutt, Badd Boyz, Shortino) on lead vocals. It is also the only Quiet Riot album which does not feature the late Kevin DuBrow on lead vocals or an other then-surviving original members. It is also the only Quiet Riot to feature Sean McNabb on bass. To some fans, it may be labeled "QR IV." QR III is a studio album released by American heavy metal band Quiet Riot. The name of this recording is short for "Quiet Riot III", and was released in 1986. Despite the title, this is actually the band's fifth album; however it was on their third major label/released-outside-Japan album.
The lead single, The Wild And The Young, is a stadium hymn to the energy of youth and its accompanying video painted an Orwellian picture of a future, where totalitarian militarists fought to wipe out rock'n'roll, a reference to the current Senate hearings concerning explicit language in heavy metal songs.

The group's follow-up, Condition Critical, was released on July 7, 1984. It was a relative disappointment, critically and commercially, selling only 1 million units. This release included yet another Slade cover (the single, "Mamma Weer All Crazy Now" - a UK chart topper for Slade) and numerous musical and lyrical nods to the aforementioned act; whether this was a decision made by the band or their producer is still subject to debate as evidenced in their VH1 "Behind The Music" documentary. Reportedly frustrated, DuBrow began letting newer bands on the L.A. metal scene know that their success was in part owed to the past successes of Quiet Riot.
This led to Sarzo quitting the group in 1985. (In 1987 the bassist went on to Whitesnake) The bass slot in Quiet Riot was filled by erstwhile collaborator Chuck Wright (of Giuffria) and the group temporarily added keyboardist John Purdell for their 1985 tour.

Metal Health was the breakthrough album for the American heavy metal band Quiet Riot and their first record without deceased legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads. It was released on March 11, 1983, bolstered by the #5 hit "Cum on Feel the Noize" and the #31 hit "Metal Health". It knocked The Police's Synchronicity out of #1 in the U.S. The album went on to sell more than 6 million copies and is considered a classic among heavy metal fans to this day. However, some critics such as Allmusic, perceive it as a one-hit wonder, owing to Quiet Riot's relative lack of critical and commercial success with following albums (and subsequent disintegration) towards the end of the 1980s. The title track was ranked #35 on Vh1's 40 Greatest Metal Songs. The band went on a tour the same year and also supported Black Sabbath on their Born Again tour in the U.S.

Quiet Riot was an American Heavy Metal band whose 1983 US Festival appearance helped to solidify metal's image. They are best known for their hit singles "Cum on Feel the Noize" and "Metal Health." They were founded in 1973 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni, under the name Mach 1. The original line-up featured lead vocalist the late Kevin Dubrow, Rhoads, Garni, and drummer Drew Forsyth.
In a radio interview given by the band in 1979, DuBrow said the band's name was born of a conversation with Rick Parfitt of British band Status Quo in which Parfitt said he'd like to name a band "Quite Right". They are ranked at number 100 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock." Quiet Riot also has a notable iconic heavy metal mascot. Their mascot resembles a man (modeled by the artist himself, Grammy Award winning illustrator Stan Watts of Cedar Park, Texas) in a metal facial mask and in a straightjacket (somewhat similar to Hannibal Lecter) which has appeared on almost every single Quiet Riot album. This mascot has been considered alongside Megadeth's Vic Rattlehead, Iron Maiden's Eddie the Head, Motorhead's Snaggletooth B. Motorhead, A.K.A Warpig, as enduring familiar heavy metal symbols.
Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of the band for the majority of its existence, was found dead in his Las Vegas, Nevada home at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2007. The cause of death was ruled an accidental cocaine overdose. Quiet Riot disbanded after the death of their lead singer.
The original four members recorded their debut album Quiet Riot, or QR I, which was released in Japan in 1977. This album features Randy Rhoads on guitar and was only released in Japan.
The song "Back to the Coast" was originally written by Randy Rhoads and his brother Kelle Rhoads when they were teenagers. It was originally called "West Coast Tryout".
Months later, bassist Kelly Garni left the band.

A Few Words
GLYDER’s a young Irish band, who formed in 2004. “Glyder” is their debut album, released back in April 2006. They’ve gotten some notable airtime on Bruce Dickinson’s BBC6 radio show with their single “PUP – Pretty Useless People”. Classic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal provide their greatest influences and the basis for their sound. You don’t have to go far into the album before you’re making comparisons to pre-Dickinson MAIDEN and THIN LIZZY. The guitars are active, the bass palpable, the drums taking a significantly more active role than just keeping time. The keyboards are subdued, but they do some nice work in “PUP” and “Die Or Dance.”
The songs are all short—only two break four minutes and not by much—so they don’t have time to lose any energy, something this band has in spades. “Stargazer” is about the only place on the album where the band takes a breath, slowing the tempo but not losing any of their power. It’s possibly the most authentically retro song on the album. GLYDER may look to Classic Rock for their archetypes, but they’re interested in creating (to quote the info sheet) “Great Modern Rock”; it’s not enough to imitate when they can still keep it modern.
Fatal GUITARS!!!!
Still, Classic/Hard Rock fans really should check this out. It’s comfortably familiar without being suspiciously recognizable. The conviction’s there and they throw in more guitar work than you usually see today.
GLYDER is worth your time.

Tony Cullen (vocals, bass),
Bat Kinane (guitar),
Pete Fisher (guitar),
Davy Ryan (drums)

A Few Words
The Crimson Idol was the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band W.A.S.P., originally released by Capitol Records in 1992 (1993 in the United States). The album is a concept album, telling the story of the rise and fall of a fictional rock star named Jonathan Steel.
The album was originally recorded as a Blackie Lawless solo album, but he bowed to fan pressure and released it under the W.A.S.P. moniker.
The Crimson Idol World Tour unusually took place 15 years after the release of the album to mark its 15th anniversary, starting on October 26, 2007 in the Principal Club Theater, Thessaloniki in Greece. It also marked the first time that the film recorded for The Crimson Idol was ever shown in public. This was played along with the band as they performed their tracks in synch with the film. This show marked the only time that the album has ever been played from start to finish by the band since recording the album. The show also featured "Mephisto Waltz" the seventh track from the 1989 album The Headless Children as the intro to the show before playing the first track of The Crimson Idol, "The Titanic Overture". All shows had a long encore section ranging from 2-6 songs, containing classics and "Take Me Up" from the new album Dominator.
